John Robertson Architects (JRA) has been appointed to undertake the refurbishment of Bush House in the Aldwych / The Strand, following the full vacation of the building by the BBC World Service later this year. The firm, which has extensive experience of sensitively refurbishing historic buildings will upgrade and restore Bush House and the neighbouring Southeast and Northeast Wings and Melbourne House to create up-to-date commercial office accommodation for Kato Kagaku and Co Ltd, the Japanese company which owns the buildings.

Initial proposals see the four existing office buildings created with internal reconfiguration providing separate entrances, circulation and cores for each. JRA will target a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating via the upgrading of all services, using subtle interventions to improve the building fabric, and providing new facilities.

The Portland stone façades will be restored and plans also include the provision of roof terraces to make maximum use of the building’s central location and superb views across London.

John Robertson, Director of John Robertson Architects commented:
“This is a very important project for the Aldwych and Strand and its surrounding area. Bush House has a long history, best known for its 70 year association with the BBC World Service. Our challenge is to preserve what is good about the building and not destroy its wonderful heritage, whilst providing the client and future tenants with the best possible accommodation and facilities.”

Work is expected to be completed in 2014. Jones Lang LaSalle is the project manager and quantity surveyor, engineers are AKT II and Hilson Moran. Jones Lang LaSalle has also been appointed as letting agent.
