In 2010, RIBA Competitions have managed three competitions open to architectural students looking at a range of different design challenges. This exhibition at milkandsugar will showcase the winners from each of these competitions.

Yele Haiti Music Studio

An international competition held on behalf of Yéle Haiti, John McAslan + Partners and Allied London to design a new music studio facility in Cité Soleil (Port-au-Prince), Haiti. The new studio is to combine the recording of music and radio programming with vocational training, micro-enterprise opportunities and to instigate job creation for at-risk youths in the area. Yéle was founded by the Haitian-born, Grammy-Award winning musician and record producer Wyclef Jean.

The competition attracted 108 entries from around the world, a shortlist of 15 were chosen by a technical team and the winner, second and third prize selected by Wyclef Jean, his team and John McAslan. First place was awarded to Christopher Morgan from Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA, second place went to Tak Kei Yip, a RIBA Part II student at Foster + Partners, London; and the third place winner was Christopher Bradley, a Post Part 1 Experience student at Norton Mayfield Architects LLP, Sheffield. On exhibition will be the 15 shortlisted designs.

Make Bethnal Green Affinity Sutton

This competition was held on behalf of Affinity Sutton, one of the largest providers of affordable homes in the country. Students were challenged to generate design ideas to contemplate what type of affordable housing scheme might have been built today on the Affinity Sutton’s 100 year-old Bethnal Green Estate, and how that design would make a positive contribution to the environment.

Eight students were selected to finesse their design proposals during a week-long placement with one of Affinity Sutton’s architect partners. Two architectural students from Oxford Brookes, George Calver and Joe Williams, were awarded first prize. On exhibition will be the eight shortlisted designs.

Nationwide Sustainable Housing Awards

Nationwide Building Society launched the second in a series of three competitions. The theme for 2009/2010 was ‘Suburban Urban – Secure and Green’ with categories for new build, refurbishment or community projects. The aim of the competition was to stimulate and reward innovative thinking about how people can live more sustainably in the future.

Design ideas were received from 44 students from 20 Schools and 9 submissions from America. Ten prizes were awarded at a ceremony hosted by Wayne Hemingway MBE and the Overall Winner of the competition was Matthew Kidner & Jonathan Davey from the University of Nottingham. On exhibition will be all ten designs.

milkandsugar is located at The Tea Factory, 82 Wood Street, Liverpool, L1 4DQ. The opening times of the exhibition are Mon-Fri 9am-5pm.

Yéle Haiti is a grassroots movement which aims to raise global awareness for Haiti and transform the country through programmes in education, sports, the arts and environment.
