Liverpool Waters’ Collingwood Dock to be transformed into a Docklands Heritage ‘Container’ Village

A planning application has been approved for the placement of eight former shipping containers at Collingwood Dock, which will be transformed into a new heritage trail visitor centre highlighting the long and illustrious history of the north Liverpool and Bootle docks.

The application for the development of the new ‘Docklands Trail’ Visitor Centre, which was submitted by Arup on behalf of Peel Land and Property (Ports) Limited and The Docklands Trail Charity is part of the wider £5 billion Liverpool Waters project. The new Heritage Trail Visitor Centre will provide a new attraction to Collingwood Dock, which will complement the Friends of Allonby Canoe Club that is already situated at the historic dock, whilst also preserving the industrial look and feel of the docks and dock boundary wall.

The publicly accessible containers will be managed by The Docklands Trail Charity and will be an invaluable source of information for school children, visitors and enthusiasts alike sharing information and stories about the many transformations the docks have seen over the years, as well as the importance of the docks to the local economy.

Peel worked with The Docklands Trail to consult with a number of partners and stakeholders, including Liverpool City Council and the Titanic Hotel, to ensure the container village is best placed to serve the local area, as well as provide a distinctive educational space for school chidren.

Ian Pollitt, assistant project director at Liverpool Waters, said:

“It is fantastic to see the plans we’ve been working on for many years become a reality. Much of the land at Liverpool Waters is currently disused dockland, we are keen to share its history with the public and encourage them to come on site and share its story. The Council’s approval of our planning application for the heritage trail visitor centre comes just weeks after we broke ground at Liverpool Waters as building work started on Plaza 1821, the £21 million, 16-storey residential tower. As more and more projects progress past the planning stage and enter the development stage, we’re looking forward to sharing even more good news in the future.”

Les Ellis, chair of The Docklands Trail Charity, said:

“I am delighted at the significant progress this project has seen so far, and with the approval of this planning application we can now bring the container village to life. Our aim is to create a first-class tourist attraction with several sites across the north Liverpool and Bootle docks which will educate children, communities and visitors on the wonderful heritage of Liverpool’s renowned port. The approval of this planning application is timed perfectly with the number of exciting projects and developments already taking place on Liverpool’s waterfront as part of the Liverpool Waters project, led by Peel. This £5 billion project will transform the city’s northern docks, regenerating a 60-hectare site to create a world-class, mixed-use waterfront quarter in central Liverpool.

KPMG Lease at Princes Dock, Liverpool Waters

KPMG SIGN NEW LEASE AT LIVERPOOL WATERS

Professional services company KPMG has signed a new five-year lease of 12,000 sqft at No. 8 Princes Dock, Liverpool Waters. KPMG is the longest standing tenant at Princes Dock and have been a resident in the five-storey Grade A office building since 1997.

KPMG joins a string of companies who have either recently renewed or secured new office space at Princes Dock, confirming the waterfront location as one of Liverpool’s leading business destinations.

The new five-year lease will take KPMG’s residency at No. 8 Princes Dock to the quarter of a century mark. During their time at the waterfront office, Peel Land and Property purchased Princes Dock and unveiled their ambitious vision for Liverpool Waters.

After lots of hard work behind the scenes to finalise the Liverpool Waters masterplan, secure planning permission and attract investment, building work is due to get underway soon on three new residential developments that have secured planning permission at Princes Dock.

The news of KPMG’s extended stay at Princes Dock follows an announcement that Euan West will succeed partner Chris Fry as office senior partner from 1 January 2018. The company has also recently made a number of promotions and new hires in the North West, with 80 new graduates, eight school leavers and 35 apprentices joining KPMG. Those new hires were accompanied by a series of internal promotions as the company expanded its presence in the North.

Liverpool Waters New Cultural Building

New Cultural Building at Liverpool Waters

Final year architectural technology students from Liverpool John Moores University have been challenged to design a new cultural building at Liverpool Waters.

The Liverpool Waters masterplan includes proposals for a cultural building in the Central Dock neighbourhood and the students have been briefed to produce concepts for how this could look once it’s developed.

As part of the design brief, the students visited the Liverpool Waters site for a tour and discussion about the £5 billion regeneration project which is one of the most prestigious waterfront investment opportunities in Europe. A group of 25 students were joined by two members of staff as they met with Ian Pollitt, assistant project director at Liverpool Waters, for an update on the work going on at the 60-hectare site.

The group also met with Paul Grover from Arup who gave an overview of planning at Liverpool Waters and Peter Swift from Planit who provided an update on proposals for the Central Dock neighbourhood. The group also spoke to heritage expert Rob Burns about the history of the site.

Central Dock is one of five neighbourhoods at Liverpool Waters and will house the new Isle of Man ferry terminal along with business, residential, entertainment and leisure facilities as well as a new public park. The outline planning permission for Central Dock includes an allocation of 3,800 homes, 25,000 sq.m. of restaurants and bars and 166,000 sq.m. of office space.

Speaking about the visit, Michael Farragher, senior lecturer in architectural technology at Liverpool John Moores University said:

“This project is all about getting students out of the classroom to tackle real life challenges and put their skills into practice on a real project. This is the next generation of architects and it’s really important that they gain the practical skills that they will need to succeed in their career.

“The new cultural building at Liverpool Waters will be a landmark on our world-famous waterfront and is a great opportunity for our students to demonstrate what they can do. The Liverpool Waters team were really accommodating and I’d like to thank them for taking the time to talk to our group and give the students an insight into managing such an enormous project.”

Since the project first got underway in 2007, the Liverpool Waters team has been developing partnerships with business and community groups to deliver ongoing social, economic and health and wellbeing benefits. As well as hosting the students from Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool Waters has also worked with the City of Liverpool College on major events such as Creamfields Steel Yard and Sound City.

Elite Synergy, have signed a ten year lease at No. 8 Princes Dock, Liverpool Waters.

Elite Synergy, who specialise in a number of services including payroll solutions, commercial utlity and insurance negotiation, finance and asset management and pensions, retirement and inheritance advice, are relocating from their current offices in the Cotton Exchange on Bixteth Street.

No. 8 Princes Dock is a five storey Grade A office building and has recently undergone a refurbishment with landlords Peel collaborating with Chapman Taylor Architects, furniture company Form and fit out contractor Jennor.

Elite Synergy will be occupying 4,500 sqft on the 3rd floor of No. 8 Princes Dock and join Pricewaterhouse Coopers, KPMG and Savills in residence at the building.
