Mann Island – RIBA to open national architecture centre in Liverpool
A “national architecture centre in the North” is to be opened by The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
Liverpool’s RIBA North will have conference facilities and a gallery “at its heart”, a spokeswoman said.
The institute’s president Jane Duncan said it would “explore the enormous impact that architecture and design has on our lives”.
It will open in August with an exhibition of designs for Liverpool that were never built.

The Court of Appeal has given heritage campaigners the green light to pursue a legal challenge against Broadway Malyan’s plans to demolish a dozen historic buildings in the centre of Liverpool, reports Building Design.

FCC, the Spanish infrastructure and environmental services group, has been awarded the contract to design, build, finance, maintain and operate the Mersey Gateway Bridge in Liverpool (UK). Worth approximately 600 million pounds, it is FCC’s largest-ever contract in the UK.

The Liverpool Central Library and Archive Project is a unique and prestigious scheme within the heart of Liverpool’s World Heritage Site. The project provides an 8,000sqm library and specialist archive and restores 4,000sqm of Grade II listed historic buildings on William Brown Street.
Azzurro Ltd was appointed sole FF&E supplier by Shepherd Construction and worked with and advised the architects, Austin Smith Lord, on product.

Developers face a wait until June 2012 to find out whether the government will call a public inquiry into a £5.5bn skyscraper scheme for Liverpool’s northern docklands. The city council planning committee unanimously approved the Liverpool Waters plan by Peel Holdings for the 150-acre site.

This building was completed for Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council as a 2 form primary school for 420 pupils with a 52 place nursery. 2020 Liverpool were appointed as a multidisciplinary team to deliver this replacement school within challenging time and budget constraints, as part of government’s primary capital program.

Architects ‘2020 Liverpool’ were appointed by Liverpool City Council to replace the mobile classrooms with a stunning 5,500 m², three-storey building comprising of varied teaching and activity areas including new dining facilities, dance and performance studios and communal social areas. The shape of the new block takes into account the existing buildings on site and addresses the long-standing problems with traffic management, student movement between buildings, undefined car parking and scattered play areas.

This building continues the architectural tradition of boiler houses as urban monument: sitting neatly on its site its glazed gable ends reveal glimpses of the power that hums within. The delightfully compact building has an articulated roof form that cleverly makes both reference to the architecture of its listed neighbours, whilst concealing the chillers.
