House Extension in Liguria
Enlarged Stone Villa in Italy: Subterranean Home Extension – design by Giordano Hadamik Architects
29 Mar 2016
Design: Giordano Hadamik Architects
Location: Liguria, Italy
A new contemporary entrance is built within an existing stone shed which leads to a subterranean house extension – a new living space for the old mansion which is connected below ground with a glass roof corridor. The new space offers a fantastic view into the valley and the river with the sea at the horizon.
Great care was taken to keep the appearance of the listed context of the historical Italian village and to place the house extension harmonically into the landscape.
Local materials like stone, timber and slate roof tiles contribute to the insertion into the natural environment. The amplification is covered with a green roof, surrounded by new trees and Mediterranean essences.
One feature of the project is the new timber staircase set within the old restored shed functioning as a new entrance to the extension. The space is characterized by natural light of new picture frame windows which are positioned carefully to capture versatile views into the landscape while descending the stairs.
The subterranean extension to the old mansion offers a light, cozy and reclusive retreat to the entire family.
An amply glass facade opens up to the large timber deck overlooking the valley. Highlight of the space is a big fireplace which is inserted into the facade creating a spectacular atmosphere.
The corridor which connects the extension back to the house is distinguished by a large glass roof.
