The client, John Graham, an artist based in Dublin, required a new studio space at the end of his garden. Due to the format of his work he needed to be able to lay it out and observe from a height. This was the premise from which the design emerged.

Dublin Dental Hospital Building
The project takes on five contiguous Protected Structures in central Dublin and converts them to new uses for the Dublin Dental Hospital. The approach is a combination of careful conservation with strong modern intervention into the fabric. The five terraced houses – a piece of city, archaeology and typology combined, will be upgraded, using voids and fireplaces for services and retaining doors and older materials and surfaces where possible; small linkages and corners are formed to make more useful suites of rooms.

Dublin Airport Building
The new terminal building, T2, has been built for Dublin Airport Authority with Arup as prime consultant and design engineers, Mace as construction manager and Pascall+Watson as architect. Costing €395million (euro), T2 will be capable of handling 15 million passengers per year, long and short-haul. The 75,000 sqm terminal, which uses approximately two thirds less energy compared to other equivalent terminal buildings, is already award winning having received a Structural Steel Design Award earlier this year.

Giants Causeway Centre
The Giant’s Causeway lies on the Causeway Coast World Heritage Site in Northern Ireland in a landscape of cliffs formed by hexagonal basalt stones, agricultural landscapes and cliffside walks. Historically a tourist site, tourism continues to be an essential part of the local economy. The visitor centre helps to manage the beautiful and fragile landscape and is a resource to those who visit the site.

The project seeks, by engulfing the older buildings, to change their nature, reversing patterns of use with a new entrance block on the north and rooms around a new garden on the south, putting nature at the centre of recovery. Linking the former chapel and hospital with a timber/zinc canopy across the garden, new volumes are clad in larch, with folded roofs bringing light deep into the plans. The older buildings are like rocks in a sea of timber and green.
