New Neighbourhood Masterplan In Gurgaon, India, Unveiled

Designed by international architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates

Tata Housing Gurgaon

London, UK – March 2011 – International architecture firm, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) has unveiled its design for a new neighbourhood in Gurgaon, India. Located 35km to the south west of New Delhi, Gurgaon is one of India’s fastest growing cities, a major outsourcing hub and home to global corporations such as IBM, Microsoft, Google, Nokia and Pepsi. Expanding employment opportunities and the consequential wealth creation is driving the rapid development of cities such as Gurgaon across India.

The 36 acre (350,000ft2/30,000m2) site is being developed by Tata Housing Development Company Ltd, the leading housing provider in the region and part of one of India’s largest corporations.

KPF’s masterplan supports the development of Gurgaon as a prestigious urban environment, introducing new ways of living to residents, drawn from the firm’s global experience of planning and designing new cities. The new neighbourhood will accommodate some 4,000 people by providing 1060 dwellings of varying sizes in a series of discrete zones with parks and urban spaces , and associated amenities, including club houses, swimming pools, tennis courts and schools, enabling a rich urban living experience and creating a strong sense of community.

Variety in scale and texture contributes to a balanced urban fabric which includes four housing solutions: towers, executive apartments, executive floors and villas catering for a broad range of budgets and family types. This enables people to stay within the development as they move through different stages of life, further reinforcing the sense of community.

A strong architectural identity will be provided by a series of towers, located on the south-west side of the site. Two 40-storey towers form a gateway to the main square providing over 280 four-bed apartments, with an additional 40-storey tower and four 12-storey towers offering a further 500 three and four-bed apartments. These mid-rise elements, providing one apartment per floor with exclusive access, mediate between the high-rise elements and the villas and duplex apartments. These new typologies include a combined design concept incorporating two ground level duplexes and a penthouse villa (with a private pool and terrace), as well as individual villas with private gardens.

KPF’s masterplan responds to the demands of the local climate which features large variations in temperature, high levels of solar radiation and the monsoon season. Designed to meet Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green Homes rating system, the scheme includes the adoption of passive design strategies such as natural ventilation and the use of locally sourced materials, and the enhancement of ecological conditions to encourage diversity in habitat through specific landscaping features.

KPF has unparalleled experience of the design of sustainable cities and neighbourhoods and is at the forefront of the emergence of luxury, high-rise living. The firm is currently working on other large-scale developments across Asia, responding to the demands of increasing urbanisation in China, Malaysia and Indonesia as well as India.

According to KPF Managing Principal, Paul Katz: “Tata Housing is one of the most prestigious residential developers in India, and we are excited to have the opportunity to introduce new living concepts to a rapidly growing city like Gurgaon. We are able to draw on our experience of designing new cities and tall buildings around the world, to create a sustainable neighbourhood suited to the specific cultural, social and climactic demands of this region.”

KPF is currently developing the design of the towers and the executive floors, the construction of which is on site and is due for completion in 2014.
