AIA Los Angeles Home Tours takes you Eastbound with its Fall 2011 Home Tour

September 22, 2011 – Los Angeles, CA – Take the crawl east with AIA|LA! With such an array of luxurious and spacious architectural treasures the tour begins in the glamorous Hollywood Hills, ending with the hidden wonders of Los Feliz.

Carlo Caccavale, AIA|LA Associate Director states, “We are very excited to go back to the East side – this is, in fact, an area of great modernist landmarks and we are happy to help discover some terrific contemporary design reflecting the style and the attitude of the East side neighborhood.” He continues, “Expect a fun and innovative architectural trip.”

Come see the magnificent homes for an opportunity to engage in Los Angelesʼ architectural vernacular. At each home you will have the opportunity to talk to the architects, docents and discover new designs for living.

Sunday 23 Oct 2011 from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Homes designed by the following designers:

• Beth Holden, Assoc. AIA – New Theme, Inc.
• Loren Judaken, Affiliate AIA – Hoffman-Vest-Judaken
• Steve Kent, AIA – Steven Kent Architects
• Rebecca Rudolph, AIA – Taalman Koch Architecture

Introducing the homes…

The design of the Green Greenberg Green House developed from the clients program and the contextual considerations of the existing site. The triangular down-slope site opens onto a plateau off the street, sloping sharply towards the south side of the property and offers panoramic views to the Los Angeles basin.

The clients wanted a zen-modern sanctuary in which to rejuvenate from their hectic Hollywood lifestyle. The home, originally built in the 1960’s, was totally gutted and reimagined to create an open floor plan for large-scale entertaining. All the custom furniture was designed by Hoffman-Vest-Judaken and is enhanced by accent pieces from Bali, China, India, Morocco and Tibet, reminding the couple of their foreign travels.

The Nichols Canyon house is centered around the pool and expansive views of the surrounding Canyon. In order to qualify as a remodel for permitting purposes, the house follows much of the previous structureʼs footprint. The House has an open plan with all spaces connecting to a voluminous two-story glass enclosed Great Room.

Working with an existing 2,000 sq ft 1950ʼs home in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, this extensive remodel focuses on reorganizing the interior program and providing greater visual and physical connectivity to the outdoors. Accommodating the family of a Colombian filmmaker and American artist with two children, the renovation opens up the living spaces and reorganizes the parents and childrenʼs zones, creating a larger multipurpose play area for the family and more private adult area that connects to a new outdoor patio.

AIA|LA Design Awards Ceremony and Presidential Honorees

As Los Angeles’ most celebrated architectural awards of the season, the AIA Los Angeles Design Awards, will take place this October 26, 2011 at Pacific Design Center.

Presented by Italian Living Umbria, the 2011 Design Awards had an enormous response from the architecture and design community with over 300 entries. The juries for the Design Awards (built projects) and the NextLA (unbuilt projects) will have their work cut out for them!

The ceremony will be held at the Silver Screen Theatre at the iconic Pacific Design Center. At the ceremony, the AIA|LA Board of Directors will celebrate, among other honorees, the completion of the Red Building, the third component at the PDC. The team that completed the Red Building will be honored with the “Building Team of the Year Award” as part of the Presidential Awards.

The Presidential Awards recognize select individuals that take leadership roles in their profession. This year’s Presidential Awards have been newly improved by AIA|LA’s president and the Board’s Design Portfolio, helping make the process of choosing recipients more transparent and organized.

Headed by AIA|LA 2011 President, Hsinming Fung, AIA, professionals in the design and architecture communities were contacted in order to collect nominations that the Board voted on, approving all winners. (For further information regarding the new AIA|LA Presidential Awards Policy, please go here: http://aialosangeles.org/content/the-aia-la-presidential-awards-policy)

“With the Board of Directors newly adopted Presidential Awards policy, the entire Board is engaged in the annual Presidential Awards selection process.” Said AIA|LA’s Executive Director, Nicci Solomons, Hon. AIACC, “The consultation of several distinguished professionals and related organizations allowed for greater participation and further promoted the Chapter’s goal of design excellence.”

About the AIA|LA Design Awards

The annual AIA Los Angeles Design Awards & Exhibit honors excellence in work built by Los Angeles architects (Design Awards) as well as work by Los Angeles Architects as yet unbuilt (Next LA Awards). In both the Design and Next LA categories, jury awards are given in three classifications: Citation, Merit, and Honor. The Design Awards juries, which are comprised of notable architects from across the United States and abroad, are selected by Committee, and change annually.

AIA|LA Health Symposium

How do we transform the health crisis into an opportunity to improve the design of our cities? What are some recent design innovations that allow architects and designers to become experts in preventative care by designing projects that encourage and facilitate healthier lifestyles?

All these questions and more will be answered at the 2011 AIA|LA Design Symposium, “Designing Healthier Lifestyles: improving the health impacts on the built environment, which will be on October 7th at the Ronald F. Deaton Civic Auditorium at the LAPD Police Administration Building.

As part of AIA|LA’s 4th annual Architecture Month in October, AIA|LA is working with the LA County Department of Health and the LA Department of City Planning to coordinate a forum to bring together architects, policy makers, planners, urban designers, developers and healthcare professionals to discuss innovative strategies, resources, tools and policies that can help create healthier communities. An evolving design/planning/health collaboration is vital to sustaining the momentum and political will for projects that can make our communities healthier, sustainable and economically resilient.

As the health evidence continues to mount (obesity rates, obesity-related chronic diseases and costs associated with treating these diseases are all growing), how can transformations in the planning and design of our built environment help address this growing epidemic?
