In south-eastern Estonia, a traveller ascending the steepish slopes of the ancient glacial valleys carved by the Piusa River and Meeksi stream will reach a complex of buildings including the ruins of a 14th-century castle, an old pub house, and the modern Pilgrims’ House. The Episcopal Castle in Vastseliina is a venue imbued with history.

The Tartu City Government and the Estonian Association of Architects have announced the international architecture competition for the Tartu Downtown Cultural Centre. The purpose of the single-stage architecture competition is to find the best architectural design for the building and outdoor space of the Tartu Downtown Cultural Centre.

Tartu city government in cooperation with the Estonian Association of Architects are inviting to participate in the international architecture competition for the Tartu downtown cultural centre.

The purpose of the competition is to find the best architectural design for the building and outdoor space of the cultural centre, which suits the given location and milieu the most and creates a whole with the urban space along the river Emajõgi.

Participants are invited to design a building for city library, art museum, event centre with multifunctional black-box and other activities supporting the cultural centre with a biologically diverse and active park and human scale public space.

The competition will be launched on the first days of January of 2023. The deadline for submissions is 5 May 2023.

Prizes: first prize 60 000 Euros, second prize 40 000 Euros, third prize 20 000 Euros and three special rewards each 10 000 Euros.

KÄBI reflects the words of the grand old man of Estonian design Bruno Tomberg: “the forest is my cathedral”. Located on the grounds of Maidla’s historic 15th century manor but hidden away from sight, a new nutshell-sized hotel in the middle of picturesque wetlands is nominated for the 2022 Annual Architecture Award of The Estonian Cultural Endowment.

The project is inspired by the naturally formed landmass called ‘drumlin’ and its widespread presence in Estonia. The site is located in Tammiste, a village in Tori Parish, Pärnu County in south-western Estonia and it was used to build a drumlin, which was subsequently covered in flora to fit in with the surrounding scenery.

Beautifully designed to reduce its negative impact on the environment, the sustainable cruise terminal can operate outside of cruise season, making the capital more accessible whilst reducing its environmental footprint.

The new Kärdla City Pavilion just off the west coast of Estonia is one several projects that was initiated to celebrate the nation’s declaration of independence 100-year anniversary. Bornstein Lyckefors Arkitekter along with Mareld Landscape won an open international competition to renew the city’s central square and create new life in the city center with a new market hall and cultural center. Part of the competition project now constructed is the new city pavilion.

Inspired by wild nature, placed on the edge of a bog, the Maidla Nature Villa building is nothing like your regular hotel room. It is located among birch trees, with bogland flooding knee-deep during high water – making it possible to start a canoe trip straight from the terrace. A boardwalk leads to the terrace in front of the elevated house.

The ‘heart’ of the sauna, hot room (also known as vapour bath or steam room), might also stand apart from the dwelling. The current hot room takes this to the extreme: from the inside, a maximum view of the sea, and from the outside, a minimal visual impact.
