ADP’s winning design receives planning permission
Planning permission was granted this week for ADP’s new academic building for the University of Sussex.
ADP’s design, won in a limited competition, will create an environment in which learning and research will fl ourish. It will provide excellent facilities for students and staff, and encourage collaboration with local business and with visitors to the campus. The building will house the School of Business, Management and Economics and the School of Law, Politics and Sociology, as well as general teaching space.
The new building will create a major new quadrangle on the campus, creating a lively forecourt for the building itself. The lecture theatre has been given a curved form, positioned as a freestanding ‘object’ within the new external space, echoing the way that the Meeting House is expressed as an object within Fulton Court, at the heart of the campus. The curved brickwork form relates to Chichester Lecture Theatre, and the Gardner Arts Centre. The main new academic building replicates the rectilinear forms of the campus, with large panels of brickwork either side of the main entrance: again, a reinterpretation of the approach to the main University Library.
Roger FitzGerald, Partner, ADP, comments: “This project is really signifi cannot in the way that it continues the main central axis through the campus, which starts with Sir Basil Spence’s Falmer House, and will be properly terminated now by our building. Whilst we relate to Spence and pick up on the special fl avour of the Sussex campus, we have introduced new forms and massing, generated to maximise natural light and ventilation in the building.”
