Two preferred teams announced for Redevelopment of JCB’s Heavy Products Site in Uttoxeter

Glenn Howells Architects and McDowell + Benedetti have emerged as the two preferred teams to develop a masterplan for the redevelopment of JCB’s Heavy Products site in Uttoxeter. The four other design teams who took part in the design stage of the competition were Bauman Lyons Architects, with ARUP, Witraz (Copenhagen), and Latz & Partner Landscape Architects (Munich); DEGW with Camlin Lonsdale, Peter Brett Associates, Hoare Lea, Arup Planning, Buro 4, Gardiner & Theobald; Letts Wheeler Architects with Whitelaw Turkington, Martin Stockley Associates; and Robert Adam Architects with Gillespies Landscape Architects, WSP, ESD
JCB will now hold further discussions with the two teams. The relocation of the Heavy Products business to a new, larger and more accessible £40 million plant next to the JCB World Parts Centre on the outskirts of Uttoxeter has presented the opportunity to redevelop the town centre site and contribute to the wider renaissance of Uttoxeter, where the Bamford family has links stretching back almost 200 years.
An application for outline planning permission has already been submitted to East Staffordshire Borough Council for the redevelopment, which will significantly reduce heavy goods traffic in and around Uttoxeter.
New masterplanning & design competition
Redevelopment of JCB’s Heavy Products site in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire
JCB, the world’s third largest manufacturer of construction equipment, is seeking to select a team to develop a masterplan for the redevelopment of its Heavy Products site in Uttoxeter. The existing industrial operations require larger more accessible premises and the historical industrial use of the site is no longer appropriate in this location.
The relocation of the Heavy Products facility to a new site will provide a unique opportunity to redevelop this town centre site and to contribute to the wider renaissance of Uttoxeter, to significantly improve its southern approach, and bring forward a mix of development capable of meeting the aspirations of the town and its residents. JCB Chairman Sir Anthony Bamford has already stated that he wants the development to leave ‘a legacy’ to the town of Uttoxeter, where the Bamford family has links stretching back almost 200 years.
The new scheme must be of outstanding architectural quality to both enhance the overall context of the area and deliver a mix of uses which will make a positive contribution to the town. It is important that the new development attracts people to live, work and enjoy leisure time in the same area to create a sense of vibrancy and enrichment. A principal design element in the new development will be the incorporation of a town park (Bamford Town Park) to act as an attractive interface between the new buildings and soft landscape environment and be an integral feature of the residential and retail elements of the site.
Architectural practices are invited to submit expressions of interest by the submission deadline of Wednesday 9th January 2008 at 14.00 hours. Up to six teams will be invited to produce some design work (3 A1 sheets each and concept model). Each team will receive an honorarium of £12,000 plus VAT for their submission.
