FIRST PHASE OF NEW DEVELOPMENT IN ONE OF THE SOUTH-WEST’S MOST ATTRACTIVE VILLAGES OPENS.

• Built on site of derelict chicken processing factory
• High quality local materials
• All 55 houses are different
• ADAM Architecture working with developers Lochailort Investments, and builders and developers Bloor Homes

The first phase of a new mixed-use development, Fortescue Fields, in the heart of the Somerset hills in the village of Norton St Philip has just been completed. The new neighbourhood has been built on the site of a derelict chicken processing factory and extends one of the most attractive and desirable villages in the South West. Designed by Robert Adam of ADAM Architecture, the new area reflects and adds to the traditional character of Norton St Philip.

Natural stone and locally sourced materials have been used wherever possible and each of the 55 houses is different. The first phase includes a new shop for the village, commercial uses, a striking new public building alongside houses and apartments. Later phases will include retirement homes and apartments.

The design was welcomed by local residents, supported by the Parish Council and approved unanimously by Mendip District Council planning committee. ADAM Architecture has worked closely with the developers Lochailort Investments and builders and developers Bloor Homes at design and construction stages to maintain the quality of the scheme.

Robert Adam says, “By creating variety in the buildings and with the use of high quality local materials we have been able to mix simple and distinctive designs to create a place that not only works within the tradition of the village but has its own individual character.”

Developers Lochailort, were keen to give something back to the local community, as Hugo Haig, Managing Director of Lochailort Investments explains: “Developers have a responsibility to create homes that will enrich and improve the lives of the community as a whole, not just for the development itself. Fortescue Fields has done exactly that through the regeneration of an unsightly area, whilst creating an attractive collection of homes, which blend seamlessly with the rest of the historic village of Norton St Philip.

Furthermore, with the inclusion of the Budgens store that the entire village can use, it will leave a legacy of quality home design, improved infrastructure and a more vibrant community for all.”

John Lusty. Managing Director of Bloor Homes agrees: “Not only are we creating a truly unique development at Fortescue Fields, in keeping with the beautiful landscape setting that this historic village enjoys, but will also leave an imprint of architectural excellence for years to come. The distinctive and elegant home designs created by ADAM Architecture will not only be enjoyed for today but also improve the lives of homeowners here for future generations.”

The development was officially opened last week by Sir Clive Woodward OBE, former Rugby World-cup winning coach and Director of Sport for the Olympic Games.
