The design of this major new Egyptian building was decided through an architectural competition. The design competition was announced on 7 January 2002.
The organisers received a huge amount of entries – 1557 from 82 countries, making it the second largest architectural competition in history.
In the second phase of this architecture competition, 20 design teams were requested to submit additional information. The judging of entries was completed by 2 June 2003.
