A fire engulfs 63-storey The Address Hotel in downtown Dubai in the United Arab Emirates December 31, 2015, reports the BBC.

The fire erupts in a building in Dubai close to the world’s tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa, ahead of a major New Year fireworks display.

This luxury five-star hotel and apartment complex in Dubai was designed by international architectural office Atkins.

Dubai officials say fire broke out on 20th floor of The Address, and originated from outside the hotel.

“Officials say they plan to go ahead with the festivities, which include three displays beginning at the Burj Khalifa. The skyscraper is decorated with 400,000 LED lights, while the fireworks display will feature 1.6 tons of pyrotechnics.”

The cause of the blaze, which is said to have started on the 20th floor, is still not known.

Atkins was responsible for the architectural and engineering design of this five star hotel and serviced apartment building located in the prestigious Business Bay area. The development comprises a business centre, health club and spa, a restaurant and parking bays for 900 cars.

The Address is a mixed-use, 63 storey tower comprising a 198 key, 5 star hotel plus 626 serviced apartments. The imposing 306m height and striking design produce a landmark project that stands at the opposite end of the lake to the world’s tallest building, the Burj Dubai.

The floor plate of the The Address hotel is based on an organic evolution of a series of linked arcs which present imposing interconnected double and triple volume public spaces with full views of the lake and Burj Dubai tower; this concept is also extended to the guest room levels. Rising above the hotel is an aerofoil-shaped tower that accommodates 45 levels of deluxe serviced apartments.

Our Carbon Critical DesignTM ethos ensured features such an air condition condensation recovery process that captures enough water to service the irrigation needs of the whole building.

Facilities provided in The Address building also include:

Commissionary kitchen and extensive back of house facilities
Central laundry which has the capacity to service not only the needs of the 5 star hotel but also four other hotels in the surrounding area
All day dining restaurant
1,100 sq m swimming pool with pool bar
Ballroom and support facilities
Club lounge

The now complete hotel supports the needs of up to 4,000 people who work, live and play in the building, every day.

In meeting the ambitious design programme and providing innovative cost solutions along the way, Atkins built a strong foundation with the client, and are now working together on other exciting new initiatives.
