Here is a taster from the most important furniture fair in the world, SALONE INTERNAZIONALE DEL MOBILE 2013…. For the last 57 years, it has been and still is the cutting edge and the most innovative furniture fair in the world. However, the notion of furniture is embracing new areas.

I started off at the Triennale where Renault launched its electric concept car, the Twin Z designed by UK star designer Ross Lovegrove. He was given “carte blanche” with the interior and the result is stunning!

He has reduced the conventional interior and introduced the latest technology, true to style, allowing the car to be controlled through your smart phone and tablet. All the known areas of the car have been eliminated; instead there is just a soft blue, all embracing “encasement” with fluorescent green stripes. The front seats, covered by a blue mesh fabric, are like green branches growing out of the floor!

Is this relevant to architecture? Yes! The Twin Z is yet another little step in the development of the silent car, the compact but spacious car. These cars will eventually make roads much more quiet.

In return, it will open up new possibilities for developments close to major city arteries and make city motorways look less like a setting from “Call of Duty”. The idea of the environmentally friendly car will be perfect, when electric energy is provided by non-fossil sources.
