The young team of James Lew and Kieren Majhail from BDP and K4 Architects led by Bob Ghosh were both highly commended by the Judging Panel for their contribution to the competition.

Philip Singleton, Chief Executive of Millennium Point said on behalf of the Judging Panel “The teams put in a lot of effort and we were delighted to meet and interview all six. I was fascinated looking at six very different ideas and how they had developed from stage one. The panel was struck by the beauty and grace of the winning idea which was underpinned by craft and technology that convinced us that the dramatic form could be constructed. We chose two further submissions and commended them for their approach and thoroughness”

Gavin Orton (RIBA West Midlands Chairman) commented: “The Panel was impressed by the quality of the schemes and diversity of entrants. Each demonstrated sensitivity to the complexities of the site and an understanding of the client’s ambitions. The creativity, dedication and commitment of the architectural community continues to inspire and I’m sure Millennium Point will benefit greatly from this competition and the opportunities it now has for its next phase of architectural evolution.”

Daniel Madeiros, competition winner said “‘We are delighted to have won the competition, it was a pleasure to meet the panel and present a proposal that will inspire and give a long lasting sense of legacy to the site. The proposal is a concise response to the competition brief and the site, our interest is a sculptural form which has precision and elegance – an object to soften and revitalise the local environment.”

Philip Singleton said “I wanted to launch a competitive process to see what the profession came up with. I’m really very pleased with the first stage results and we now have six ideas that will be developed a little further.”

“The competition was designed to draw attention to the North side of Millennium Point on Jennens Road. This area feels very under played, yet many people approach us from that direction.”

Gabrielle Omar, Lolli & Square commented “The short-listed applicants demonstrated an impressive understanding of the site, and answered the brief with great knowledge and research of what Millennium Point brings and intends to bring to the local community – as well as internationally. The competition has been very successful and attracted 27 entries, offering an impressive array of ideas, with varied yet interesting styles of presentation. The applicants varied from single entrants to entries from larger firms, which illustrated how effective the initial brief was in capturing the imagination of so many.”

The teams will now present their designs to the Judging Panel at a final interview at the end of February 2013.
