Coffee Cup Starter Home design proves a hit with judges
The design of a starter home which incorporates used and non-recyclable coffee cups as both construction and insulation has been shortlisted for a national building award.
Created by Clear Architects, the design is not simply an innovative way of recycling unwanted materials. It also demonstrates how a home such as this could be constructed for as little as £41,000.
The “Self-Build on a Shoestring” competition is being held by the National Custom & Self Build Association (NaCSBA), with the winner announced at the Grand Designs Live exhibition at Birmingham NEC on 20 October. The panel of judges will include industry celebrities including Kevin McCloud, Charlie Luxton, George Clarke and Wayne Hemingway. Also judging will be Lord Gary Porter, the former leader of the Local Government Association.
The government has announced plans to build 200,000 starter homes across the UK within the next four years which will all be priced under £250,000 or (£450,000 in London). NaCSBA however, believes that houses can be constructed much more cheaply than this and launched the competition in response.
The brief for entrants was to design a home measuring no less than 65 sq m, incorporating a living and dining area, kitchen, bathroom, study area and one or two bedrooms; all for under £50,000.
In addition to the inclusion of disposable coffee cups, Clear Architects’ design also incorporates a green roof covering, solar heated water system and flame retardant walls and flooring.
Melanie Clear, director of RIBA-Chartered Clear Architects says:
“Although as a practice we are typically involved in innovative, luxury developments, we wanted to demonstrate that bijou can also be stylish and that small budgets do not deter inventive design.
We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this award, which recognises our team’s talent, skill, creativity and resourcefulness”.
