Prefabrication & Assembly
Perched at the edge of a stunning rock island, in the harsh conditions of Northern Ontario, Canada, the sauna pushes Architecture to the limits of imagination and buildability.

A crystalline, charred-black cedar ‘box’ nestles into the rock, hovering at the water’s edge, masking a sensuous, curvaceous “grotto” inside. This is an Architecture of discovery, wonder and delight.

The sculptural interior is accomplished only by combining the most advanced computer modeling and CNC fabrication with old-world, European hand-craftsmanship. It is this exploratory and pioneering spirit that drives our firm.

Prefabrication & Site
Underlying the technical achievements of the project is the architectural poetry of the space, fusing the intimate ritual of the sauna (heat, steam, rock and body), with the ruggedness and beauty of the Canadian landscape.

The building is a sophisticated exercise in building science, prefabrication and ecology. The building faces extreme conditions throughout the year (icebergs in winter, a watershed condition in summer, intense interior heat and humidity) – necessitating a high performance envelope.

With the only access to the island by water, the entire project had to be built off-site requiring a sophisticated structural system and assembling method.
