Visitors to Cambridge can take their pleasurable pick from over 800 years of outstanding architecture.
But as an iconic university town, sometimes its older buildings grab more glory than their modern counterparts.
So in order to cast the spotlight on contemporary Cambridge, fuel your architectural fantasies with these five beautiful buildings.
- Magna Housing
Magna Housing at Harrison Drive was designed by bptw architects as a community of luxury apartments and high-spec family houses nestled around central landscaped gardens.
The structure of the four, five and six-storey blocks is constructed of reinforced concrete and a light gauge steel frame, with cool cubed facades softened by warm brown brickwork and glass balconies.
It’s an acclaimed scheme and was shortlisted for the RICS East of England Award 2018.
- Storey’s Field
Storey’s Field Community Centre and Nursery is an elegant architectural solution that serves the needs of north west Cambridge’s new Eddington community.
Designed by McInnes Usher McKnight Architects, the 100-place nursery building borders three sides of a landscaped courtyard and includes clever features especially designed for children — such as pinhole windows representing star constellations and larger windows in building block shapes.
It’s another building with a brick façade, but it’s more decorative and ornate than that of Magna Housing.
- Fijal House
Fijal House by Mole Architects is actually located in Ely — but it’s worth the 14-mile journey to take in this mini masterpiece in all its glory.
It’s a residential home in the cathedral city’s central conservation area and nestles nicely between neighbouring Edwardian properties.
Built from a prefabricated timber frame, the saw-tooth texture of its front elevation is achieved by setting bricks at 90-degree angles and is inspired by Ely Cathedral’s stone columns. This Scandinavian-style home looks sleek and simple, yet sophisticated.
- Kettle’s Yard
Kettle’s Yard is a complex of connected artisanal cottages given a new lease of life through subtle yet substantial refurbishments that incorporate modern architectural features.
As stylish extension was completed by David Owers and Leslie Martin in the 1970s and a brand-new education wing expands its capacity by around 200 per cent.
It was a finalist in the 2018 AJ Retrofit awards and its late modern elements blend smoothly and seamlessly with the original design.
- Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge Campus
Anglia Ruskin Distance Learning’s virtual campus allows students across the globe to study from the comfort of their own homes — but the university’s bricks and mortar campus in Cambridge ticks all the right design boxes too.
Designed by Hawkins Brown, the £20 million rebuild replaced an outdated city centre edifice with a modern, airy building that uses glass, balconies and internal mezzanines to maximise space and create a fantastic sense of flow.
These five beautiful buildings are merely the tip of Cambridge’s architectural iceberg — but they’re an exciting introduction to a city replete with diverse design.
