Allies and Morrison and Devereux Architects Masterplan to expand Addenbrooke’s Hospital

Allies and Morrison and Devereux Architects have completed a strategic masterplan to develop and extend Addenbrooke’s Hospital site, placing it at the heart of a new Cambridge Biomedical Campus – a world-class exemplar for integrated hospital facilities, biomedical research and education.

The architects’ proposals were launched yesterday, Tuesday 22nd September, by the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as the framework for the Trust’s 2020 vision to redefine the site.

Spanning 70 hectares at the southern edge of the city of Cambridge, the masterplan brings an urbanism to the Campus rarely seen in healthcare development. It will have a population equivalent to a small town and a structure of streets, squares and gardens.

The scale and complexity of the development has provoked a robust site layout that allows for intuitive way finding. It focuses on a legible and connected public realm in which common facilities encourage social interaction and travel and energy requirements are reduced. The interactions between clinical and research staff on the new campus promise to have significant benefits for translational medical research.

The masterplan’s series of streets not only promotes pedestrian activity but also develops a distinctive, memorable sense of place on an appropriate, human scale. Its strong identity is based on high quality architecture, public spaces and landscaping in Addenbrooke’s historical context: the city of Cambridge.

The scheme continues Allies and Morrison and Devereux Architects’ successful collaboration in the healthcare sector. The practices’ first collaboration, 33 Queen Square, a project for the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Institute of Neurology, won the Judges Special Award in the best hospital design category at last year’s Building Better Healthcare Awards.
