Meet the material trendsetters…

Material Lab Central Hub at the Surface & Materials Show (18 – 20 October)

Award-winning experts Material Lab will curate a 118 sqm material library forming a focal point of the Surface & Materials Show (18-20 October, NEC, part of UK Construction Week). Designed by Here You Are Studio, the hub brings together leading manufacturers and designers, and emerging talent.

The inspirational display is sponsored by Dulux, Johnson Tiles, Granorte and Jesmonite, and those brands will also reveal their latest trends, product lines and design collaborations at the show. The Material Lab Central Hub will also see a curated collection of new work and samples by surface design pioneers, such as Giles Miller Studio, Daniel Heath, Evan James Design, Burel, Kit Miles, Smile Plastics and Solomon & Wu.

A dedicated Innovators section will present a hand-picked selection of work by emerging talent, including new rug designs made with recycled carpet off-cuts by Isabel Webb, panels and fibres made from corn husk by Apilada Vorachart, aluminium artworks by Rachel Howarth, handmade paper, zinc and resin pieces by Grace Gallagher, steel wool and 3D printed materials by Studio IIio and concrete tiles by Anni Tavener.

Jim Biddulph, Projects and Materials Manager at Material Lab says: “We’re dedicated to be seeking out and supporting the latest surface material makers and manufacturers, so it’s exciting to be able to bring a selection of the very best innovators to a show that is equally as devoted. We hope visitors to our hub will be inspired by what they learn and discover, taking some new ideas away with them for their future projects.”

The Surface & Materials hub will also be the place to catch a series of making workshops.

The Surface & Materials Show announces a dynamic programme of issue-based seminars, talks, workshops and features

This year’s Surface & Materials Show (18 -20 October) will come at a crucial time for the construction industry, when the sharing of knowledge and ideas is ever more vital.

In October, the worlds of architecture, design and construction will converge on the NEC Birmingham to explore the industry in post referendum Britain. With nine shows under one roof at UK Construction Week, including the Surface & Materials Show, there’s a broad and comprehensive agenda – and a key opportunity to sharpen the focus in an engaged and networked way.

For the Surface & Materials Show, together with inspiring products from a range of UK and international exhibitors, a packed programme of events will reflect the challenges and opportunities post-Brexit. Core focus for seminar subjects include the importance of modernising architectural education, the use of smart materials for better building and ways to enhance trust in terms of sustainability in the surface market.

The UK Construction Week main stage will also host discussions on why the Northern Powerhouse has become even more important, thoughts on plugging the gaps between productivity, innovation, investment and skills, and how to get future-ready.

The central feature at the Surface & Materials Show will display a curated selection by Material Lab. Products chosen will be at the cutting edge of the industry and designed to meet the evolving needs of architects, interior designers, facilities managers and specifiers.

• Flooring Workshop (FITA)
The Flooring Industry Training Association (FITA) will hold flooring workshops covering all areas of contract flooring, including wood, carpet, vinyl, laminate, tools and accessories.

• Wiki House
Visitors to UK Construction Week Smart Buildings Theatre will see in the flesh a model Wiki House – an open source home design concept. Wiki House is a trailblazing affordable housing alternative, which allows for easy self-assembly and customisation and incorporates the latest smart technology.

Connect with manufacturers:
The Surface & Materials Show will host over 1,500 sqm of stands featuring both established and emerging brands within the industry – from external cladding and paving to internal flooring, anti-bacterial work surfaces and elegant wall-treatments to stylish sound insulation. The latest in sustainable products and practices will be presented, while opportunities to engage, network and socialise will be abundant.
