Aedas’ designs for Birmingham’s largest speculative office development to date at Colmore Plaza, Birmingham city, have been realised.
The 14-storey landmark development, designed for Abstract Land Ltd and Carlyle Group has transformed the former site of the Birmingham Post and Mail Tower. The 310,000sq m. buiding’s first occupiers will be Davis Langdon LLP. The building was named as the most valuable piece of real estate in Birmingham to date as of Christmas 2006 when it sold for a reported £150 million to the US Private Equity Company, Carlyle Group.
Aedas has fulfilled its, and the client’s intention to create a building that has a distinctive architectural presence and vitality whilst embodying a modern and simple aesthetic. The project has utilised the highest quality cladding materials, glazing technologies, manufacturing technology, suppliers and specialists to achieve the best architectural solution possible.
The project has been delivered using two construction techniques that have saved time throughout the programme – unitised curtain walling incorporating glass, steel and ceramic tile panels are key building features. Materials have been manufactured off-site and installed rapidly. Colmore Plaza is also the tallest building in the United Kingdom to specify Dramix® Steel Fibre Concrete for each of its 14 floors, which has saved time, material and labour.
The ground floor area for Colmore Plaza is 310,000sq m. and the design includes the creation of a new public square to facilitate future links to the further phases of development. The building is located at Printing House Street, Birmingham, B4 6AX, United Kingdom.
