Surface Design Awards winners revealed

The winners of the much anticipated Surface Design Awards 2014 were announced at a packed ceremony on the last day of Surface Design Show.

Surface Design Awards winners for 2014

Organised by Montgomery, the Awards champion the best in progressive design and innovative surfaces and are the only international awards to focus exclusively on surface design.

Show Director Christopher Newton said ” In just two years the Surface Design Awards have become the leading international accolade for surface design. With winning projects from China, Japan, UAE and USA is refreshing to see surface innovation crossing the globe”

Hosted by Anabelle Filer, Founder of SCIN, the ceremony kicked off with a keynote address by Sarah Featherstone of award-winning architectural practice Featherstone Young.

Twelve winners in six categories were announced before Mayfair House, London was awarded the accolade of Supreme Winner:

Judging the awards were a panel of design experts comprising Andy MacFee, Scott Brownrigg Architects ; Christopher Dezille, Honky; Maria Smith, Studio Weave; Lucy Spencer, Interior – ID and Renee Mascari, KBB National Training Group. The judges were co-chaired by Professor Will Alsop of All Design and Vanessa Brady, the President of the Society of British Interior Design.

13 September 2013 – Surface Design Show has announced the final call for entries for the 2014 Surface Design Awards. The awards champion the best progressive design and use of innovative surfaces worldwide, and are believed to be the only awards to focus exclusively on surface design.

Free to enter, the 2014 Surface Design Awards will be judged by a panel of international design experts including Je Ahn and Maria Smith, Studio Weave, Lucy Spencer, Interior – ID, Christopher Dezille, Honky, Renee Mascari, KBB National Training Group, Andy Macfee, Scott Brownrigg Architects, and are co-chaired by Will Alsop, All Design and Vanessa Brady, President of the Society of British Interior Design.

Will Alsop said “As designers are presented with more and more material options the opportunities for innovation expands. The awards will show how architects and designers have met this challenge. I hope to be amazed, delighted and inspired.”

Maria Smith of Studio Weave said “I am looking forward to taking part in the judging of the Surface Design Awards. I am especially interested to see new materials with exciting prospects and the ingenious or even off-label use of established technologies.”

The trophies for the Surface Design Awards have been exclusively created by Bottle Alley Glass, a company which takes unwanted and discarded glass bottles and turns them into a unique range of beautiful recycled glass products such as tiles, lighting panels and bespoke products.

Deadline for entries is 20 September 2013. The shortlist will be revealed on 4 November 2013 and the winners will be announced at the Surface Design Show in the Business Design Centre, London on 6 February 2014.
