Vietnamese Architect Named Laureate of SIA-Getz Architecture Prize 2016

Hoang Thuc Hao architect is Vietnam’s first laureate for the Prize.

An International Jury Panel comprising renowned architects from Asia and Australia, has selected an award-winning architect from Vietnam – Mr Hoang Thuc Hao (1+1>2 International Architecture J.S.C) as the Laureate for the SIA-Getz Architecture Prize for Emergent Architecture in Asia 2016. Mr Hao, the sixth recipient of the prestigious Award, will be presented with his Prize Medallion by Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Culture, Community & Youth, at an Award Presentation Ceremony at The Star Performing Arts Centre this evening (11th November 2016).

The Jury Panel, chaired by Mr Richard Ho (RichardHO Architects, Singapore), comprised of Mr Mochamad Ridwan Kamil (Urbane Indonesia PT and Mayor, Bandung, Indonesia); Mr Rocco Yim (Rocco Design Architects Limited, Hong Kong); Mr Tony Grist (HASSELL, Australia); Ar. Sathirut Nui Tandanand (President, Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA), Thailand); and Mr Manit and Ms Sonali Rastogi (Morphogenesis and Prize Co-Laureates 2014, India).

The Panel selected Mr Hoang Thuc Hao as the Laureate for 2016 for his distinct architectural philosophy and the significance of his works. The Jury found Mr Hao’s cultural sustainability philosophy impressive. “We felt that Mr Hao’s work is a great example of how architecture can be contextual and yet liberating for the underprivileged. It goes beyond building sustainability in that he addresses cultural sustainability in his works, an aspect often neglected in developing economies,” said Mr Richard Ho, Chair of the Jury Panel.

“I am honoured to be the Laureate for the SIA-Getz Architecture Prize 2016. I see this Award as a recognition of my work among the under-privileged and rural communities. Many parts of Asia are still rural and under-developed. I do hope that more architects will step up to bring creative and sustainable solutions to the architectural needs of rural and underprivileged communities. “It is encouraging that more award-winning architects are being nominated over the years. There were about 20 nominations from ten countries this year – our largest number to date. I’m pleased that the SIA-Getz Architecture Prize is gaining momentum and ranks alongside established international awards,” said Mr Ong Tze Boon, President, 56th Council 2016-2017, Singapore Institute of Architects.

The next SIA-Getz Architecture Prize for Emergent Architecture in Asia will, tentatively, be in 2018.
