NATHALIE WEADICK TO BE CONFERRED WITH RIBA HONORARY FELLOWSHIP IN RECOGNITION OF HER CONTRIBUTION TO ARCHITECTURE.

Sept 30, 2016 – Nathalie Weadick, architectural curator and director of the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF) since 2007, is to be conferred with an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in recognition of “the enormous contribution (she has) made to architecture.”

Previous recipients of an RIBA Honorary Fellowship include artist Grayson Perry, designer Sir Terence Conran, artist Anish Kapoor, curator Sir Nicholas Serota, designer Paul Smith, photographer Helene Binet, artist Ai Weiwei and former BBC Creative Director Alan Yentob. Previous Irish recipients include architectural writer Dr Sandra O’Connell and former Irish Times Environment Editor and author Frank McDonald.

Wicklow-born, Dublin-based Weadick was nominated by the honour by renowned Irish architect John Tuomey (of O’Donnell +Tuomey Architects) – a previous recipient of a Royal Gold Medal – and Open House Worldwide founder Victoria Thornton.

Nathalie’s recent work in the architectural sphere has included leading the development of Open House Dublin since 2007, now Ireland’s largest annual festival for architecture; establishing the National Architects in Schools Initiative across 32 schools throughout Ireland; acting as Commissioner of the Irish exhibition at the Venice Architectural Biennale 2008 and 2010, as well as co-curating the 2008 exhibition The Lives of Spaces; co-curating New Horizon_architecture from Ireland with Raymund Ryan, presented on three continents as part of Irish Design 2015; and curating We Built this City for Irish Design 2015, a trilogy of talks and short films in London, New York and Chicago.

Speaking about the decision of the RIBA Honours Committee, Nathalie said: “I am honoured and delighted to receive this distinction. The personality of the IAF, the small but impactful organisation I lead, is more than a deliverer of events, it is also as a laboratory of ideas, a place where old ideas are challenged and new ones created, a place where architecture is not solely explored as an object focused art-form, but can be described in relation to experience, use, influence and process. I am passionate about inspiring minds through my curated programmes at the IAF, trying to encourage people to think differently about their cities and towns and to generate ideas, partnerships, enquiry, debate and awareness.

Presentation of the fellowship will take place, in London, on January 30 next on the occasion of the award of the 2017 RIBA Royal Gold Medal.

ABOUT NATHALIE WEADICK

Nathalie Weadick is a curator of architecture and spatial practice based in Dublin. She is director of the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF), an organisation committed to communicating the culture of architecture and urbanism to the public.

Since 2007 she has led the development of Open House Dublin, Ireland largest annual festival for architecture and part of the Open House Worldwide family, which has seen audiences and the appreciation of architecture grow tenfold. Key projects for her currently at the IAF are; Ballyfermot Play Park a community led design project with Dublin City Council, the Matheson Foundation and architects Relational Urbanism, and the National Architects in Schools Initiative across 32 schools coast to coast in Ireland. In 2013 she curated The Everyday Experience in the Irish Museum of Modern Art about the impact of architecture on people. From 2013 to present she has curated, with Arup, New Now Next a series of talks in Dublin featuring international architects such as Jeanne Gang, Tatiana Bilbao, Minsuk Cho, Kunle Adeyemi, Ole Scheeren and Grafton Architects.

While developing projects at home she is also committed to promoting and developing audiences for Irish architecture globally, in 2015 she conceived and co curated New Horizon_architecture from Ireland with Raymund Ryan Curator, Heinz Architectural Center, Pittsburgh for Irish Design 2015. The practices selected were TAKA, Clancy Moore, Hall McKnight, Steve Larkin, GKMP, A2, Ryan Kennihan, AP+E, Urban Agency and Emmett Scanlon, across 3 cities in one year with installations at London Festival of Architecture, Chicago Architecture Biennial and Shenzhen/Hong Kong Bi City Biennale.

In 2008 and 2010 she was Commissioner of the Irish exhibition at the Venice Architecture Biennale, and in 2008 she co curated The Lives of Spaces with Hugh Campbell, Head of School of Architecture UCD. 2004-2007 she held the position of Deputy Director at The Architecture Foundation in London. Formerly, Director of the Butler Gallery in Kilkenny for five years, where she curated shows by international artists.

She has written for many publications and presented on spatial practice and architecture

Established in 2005, the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF) is a vibrant and passionate not-for-profit organisation that aims to excite people about the cultural value of architecture.

30 September 2016 – The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced the 2017 RIBA Honorary Fellowships, which will be awarded to eighteen individuals from a diverse spectrum of backgrounds, including journalism, local government, art, architectural history and design.

RIBA Honorary Fellowships are awarded annually to people who have made a particular contribution to architecture in its broadest sense. This includes its promotion, administration and outreach; and its role in building more sustainable communities and in the education of future generations.
