News from Gareth Hoskins Architects re the Architect of the Year Awards:

Gareth Hoskins Architects won the award as UK Architect of the Year for Health 2006 at the national Building Design Awards ceremony in London last Thursday. The Award was given on the basis of not just a single building project as with most awards, but on the basis of the practice’s work as a whole, highlighting a range of recent projects such as the Children’s Hospice at Loch Lomond for CHAS.

It is the first time this national Award has been won by a Scottish based practice, or indeed any practice based outside London. The judges were impressed with the range of health buildings presented by the practice, applauding the “… real sense of intimacy and care in the environment they have created…”

On the same evening Scottish practice NORD Architecture won the prestigious Young Architect of the Year Award 2006, the only company outside London to have reached the final list. The YAYA award is organised by Building Design magazine to recognise and reward the UK and Ireland’s most promising architectural practice with a principal under the age of 40.

The judges said NORD has “…a raw energy and a passionate commitment while its invention and ability to get things built is remarkable…”
