Dorte Mandrup Architects Receives Swedish Architecture Prize

Skåne’s Architecture Prize has since 2001 in cooperation with Swedish Association of Architects awarded the best project of the year in Skåne, Southern Sweden. This year the prize goes to Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter for Råå Day Care Center in the municipality of Helsingborg.

“We are very proud to receive Skåne Architecture Prize 2014. This is our first completed building in Sweden, and it ’s great to be awarded for the very thing that is our trademark – to create unique buildings which are deeply rooted in the Scandinavian tradition, with care and knowledge of how to create good public spaces“ says Dorte Mandrup.

Råå Day Care Center is situated on the scenic beach between the old Råå School and the sea Øresund. The building’s design is based on the surrounding landscape, with its flat slightly sloping dunes and the distinctive typology of the small fishermen houses.

Large windows in the facade and roof create close contact with the sea and the surrounding landscape providing ideal daylight conditions all year round. The group rooms are visually enclosed by “bookcase-walls” made of plywood. The building creates varied and exciting spaces for play, learning, fellowship and reflection for children and adults.

“Distinctive and playful architecture”
“Skåne Architecture Prize 2014 goes to Råå Day Care Center for distinctive architecture that interacts with the existing coastal scenery and as well as highlights the building’s uniqueness and the site where it is built. This Helsingborg Pre-school building inhabits the site and the architecture is experienced significantly and playful. At the same time the building subordinates to the landscape and the scale of the existing buildings“ says the jury.

Architecture & workmanship
In the motivation for awarding the building the jury emphasises:
“The skill the architect has demonstrated in giving shape to the needs of the users with great integrity and responsiveness – in a way that raises the bar for the contemporary architecture of Skåne. And the care for details and the workmanship that, with respect for the architectural form, characterizes the construction of the Day Care Center.“
