Christ’s Hospital School, in Horsham, is an independent school that moved to the site in the 1890s following the construction of a purpose made campus designed by Aston Webb. The buildings are Grade II* Listed.

NRAP architects were appointed in July 2016 following a competitive interview and have since received planning permission for the development of a 20,000 ft2 facility.

Our design for Christ’s Hospital School provides state-of the-art teaching and catering facilities, as well as an improved public realm integrated seamlessly into the existing complex of listed buildings. The building is centred on two significant new external spaces; one an entrance court, the other a more private place serving the surrounding buildings.

Proposals involved removing a large grade 2 listed building, as well as major changes to the existing infrastructure, services and landscaping. The proportion, scale, mass and orientation of the building and public spaces were carefully considered to ensure not only the delivery of an excellent public realm, but also the seamless integration of new facilities into the existing campus, phased to ensure all facilities are maintained during construction.

Magdalene College Cambridge invited proposals from a shortlist of architects, after which we were appointed on the basis of design quality and commercial feasibility.
