Jestico + Whiles – Top Architect in Sunday Times Green List

10 Jun 2011

Jestico + Whiles Architects has been revealed as the highest placed architectural practice in this year’s Sunday Times Green List, to be published on Sunday 12th June. The firm, which is ranked at number 32, sits eight places above the second of the three practices to make this year’s 60-strong list.

Now in its fourth year, the Green List is based on a rigorous survey of the environmental targets and strategies of businesses of all sizes from a wide variety of sectors. Uniquely, the views of employees within the companies are also sought on a range of issues from encouragement to commute in a sustainable way, to younger members of staff driving environmental change.

Jestico + Whiles’ appearance in the list recognises the firm’s commitment to sustainable design demonstrated by its track record of work, notably the Open University Business School in Milton Keynes and the House for the Future near Cardiff, along with the iHub, University of Southampton Mountbatten Building, the Central School of Speech and Drama, sustainable housing and schools. It is also a testament to the practice’s business management policies from monitoring and offsetting carbon emissions to the formation of the ‘Green Team’ which constantly monitors and finds ways of improving environmental performance.

Heinz Richardson, Director of Jestico + Whiles said: “We are delighted to be included in this year’s Sunday Times Green List. Jestico + Whiles was a pioneer of sustainable design designing one of the first naturally ventilated atrium office buildings in the UK for the Policy Studies Institute and the first zero-energy office building design in the UK for Hyndburn District Council.

“We have always recognised that as a business we need to embrace our own design philosophy and introduced green office systems and monitoring of our energy usage many years ago. I hope this list encourages other firms, right across the business sectors to continue to assess and improve their environmental performance.”

Alastair McCall, Editor of the Sunday Times Green List added; “The presence of so many construction companies and architectural practices on the Green List suggests that we are quite literally building a greener future. The buildings these companies are working on today will help us meet our carbon reduction targets tomorrow.”

“Companies like Jestico + Whiles, the highest ranked of the three architects in the Green List, are changing the game and showing what can be achieved if we all pull together for the good of the planet.”
