Stopera, het Stadhuis-Muziektheater van Amsterdam
Stopera, the Town Hall – Music Theatre in Amsterdam
Location: immediately south of the city centre
Grandiose architecture, at odds with the historic texture of the city in both planning terms and in terms of materials – apparently highly praised as good new civic architecture, but the large scale feels alien when compared to the tight-knit streets and alleys that along with the canals make Amsterdam’s streetscapes so popular.
Sadly many medieval buildings were demolished to make way for the new Stadhuis-Muziektheater center. The Stopera was conceived by Viennese architect Wilhelm Holzbauer, and completed by Cees Dam.
