INSPIRATION:
This project was inspired by the client, an established painter and avid gardener. The vision was to create a building, as an artwork, to arouse the client’s creative impulse and reflect the expansion of creative freedom without intervening in his work. To nurture the artist’s love of gardens and gardening, a building form was sought that could be placed as a sculpture in relationship with the existing home in order to create a courtyard and interconnected gardens amongst the two structures.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The new Fisher Studio is located on a large, verdant property in composition with the client’s existing home in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Gary Fisher is an artist based in Washington D.C. and Rehoboth Beach and this building functions as a professional studio for making art, a gallery for exhibiting paintings and hosting receptions as well as a retreat from the main house. One of very few modernist structures in the region, the building is intended to be both sculptural and ecologically sensitive.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The entrance is hidden among wraparound decks to encourage the sense of discovery as one interacts with the architecture and gardens to gain entry. Inside, the main volume holds a prep-room and hosts the studio/gallery, scaled with high ceiling and ample floor area so that large paintings can be created and also viewed from a distance sufficient to gain proper perspective. An open foyer flows seamlessly to a second volume with lower ceiling holding the artist’s study, lounge and full bathroom.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project was started in June 2014 and completed in June 2015 and is located in Rehoboth Beach, DE.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Clad entirely in American Red Cedar, the building features 100% Daylighting, 100% LED light sources, solar panels, skylights, tankless hot water heater, waterless urinal, highly energy efficient windows, insulation exceeding requirements, low VOC paints, stains and adhesives, and an integrated fresh-air intake system. The Northern window wall, translucent skylights and shaded Southern clerestory windows work in concert so that, on most days, the studio can function with no artificial light.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The studio is 158 sqm. Photovoltaic solar array is 5.4kW LED Lamps are 95 CRI at 3000k.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
After engaging in a dialogue with the client about his art, process and goals, Mr. Ewbank used “problem seeking” to identify and resolve issues related to use of space, critical lighting factors and sustainability. This was enhanced by conversations with other artists, specialists, manufacturers, general documentary research and onsite testing of lighting solutions. The result is a building that functions appropriately as a studio/gallery and integrates multiple ecological design strategies.

CHALLENGE:
The feeling of simplicity in a piece of modern architecture belies the increased effort necessary to create it. Achieving clean forms in a building increases the complexity of construction and adds stress on the budget. After convincing the client to endorse a more extensive vision than was first imagined, careful planning was required in order to achieve uncommon space within a reasonable budget. The project was realized with diligent coordination between architect, builder and client.

PROFILE:
Shawn Ewbank Design Collaborative is a boutique design firm based in the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Region of the United States, serving clients from the East Coast to Texas. Our practice is guided by the idea that Architecture and Art represent a kind of language that goes beyond aesthetics and can both reflect and guide patterns of response (physically and metaphysically), in individuals and societies alike.

We undertake the art of architectural design and planning, from concept to implementation, towards refining this language in service of those who may come to interact with the spaces we design. Our intention is to sustainably create habitable artworks for the human spirit and manifest the phenomenon of space in a way that elevates awareness and affirms the desire to conceive a more beautiful way of being.
