The world’s only underwater spa has recently reopened after an extensive redesign by architect Richard Hywel Evans, the man behind the world’s first carbon free hotel.

The World’s First Underwater Spa

The underwater spa, which forms part of the luxury Huvafen Fushi resort in the Maldives, comprises two double treatment rooms and a separate relaxation area with mind-blowing views under the Indian Ocean. The $180,000 redesign of the interior creates the boldest and most sensory appealing spa in the world.

Guests enter the underwater spa along a passageway lit with colour-change lights in the ceiling to enhance the overall sensory experience. Once inside, reconfigurable sliding walls allow the space to be opened up to make the most of the spectacular views or closed to create a more intimate space for treatments.

The transformation also includes lifting the interior wall colour from a light wood to a double curvature organic form, installing a stretch Barisol ceiling and replicating the sea floor by laying blue resin bonded pebble tiles under the foot. The resort itself comprises of 43 naturally modern rooms located both on the beach and on stilts over the Indian Ocean.

Richard Hywel Evans, the architect behind the redesign commented: “We wanted to create an interior that was in keeping with the spa’s position at the bottom of the sea. The previous timber themed design really detracted from the incredible and calming experience of the space.

Our challenge was therefore to create a truly breathtaking area that focuses maximum attention on the sub-aqua environment and filtered light, which I’m glad to say we have achieved.” Richard went on to say: “This is a truly breathtaking spa and I am sure that users will ‘feel the difference’ and enjoy the experience. The underwater spa is now truly the world’s most unique spa experience”.
