ReDesigning the Welsh Terrace – Welsh Design Competition
RSAW and its competition partners the Welsh Government, CADW, RCT Homes and Grŵp Gwalia Cyf are pleased to announce Hatcher Prichard Architects with Ramboll (consulting engineers) as winners for the ReDesigning the Terrace Competition.
RCT Homes will now work with the winning architects to develop the scheme and, subject to viability, will construct the resulting design as a live pilot study on one of their existing property plots.
The ReDesigning the Welsh Terrace judging panel described the design as:
“a realistic practical scheme which tackles the challenges of lifestyle, fuel poverty, affordability whilst not compromising the character of the traditional Welsh terraced house.”
Winning Architect Shaun Prichard of Hatcher Prichard comments:
“The terrace is synonymous with life in Wales. Valleys of dense, back to back housing patterns have long perpetuated close knit communities as captured in the work of artists down the ages. Epitomised in the beautiful paintings of Earnest Zobole, we would humbly suggest that the strength of these communities and their reliance on the strong vernacular model of the terrace is as relevant today as ever.”
“Global warming however is a serious threat to all communities, and the planet’s natural resources are an increasingly precious commodity. These two facts have driven the sharpest minds to find ever increasing innovative solutions to the way we build, recycle, harness alternative means of energy and ultimately live. Hatcher Prichard Architects together with Ramboll Consulting Engineers have welcomed the opportunity to investigate ways of integrating cutting edge ideas into the wonderfully rich social fabric that is inherent with living in a welsh terraced house.”
Minister for Housing, Regeneration and Heritage, Huw Lewis AM:
“Properly understanding and caring for terraced houses is important for their own sustainability and also for the health and well being of families that occupy them. A competition that investigates and celebrates these issues, with a view to finding innovative solutions is welcomed and I congratulate the Royal Society of Architects in Wales for developing this initiative”.
All of the shortlisted entries will be exhibited at the RSAW’s annual conference “Sustaining our Heritage” held at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama on the 13th December 2012. The Minister for Housing Regeneration and Heritage, Huw Lewis AM will announce the winner during his keynote address.

ReDesigning the Welsh Terrace Shortlist
ReDesigning the Welsh Terrace – Welsh Design Competition
RSAW and its competition partners the Welsh Government, CADW, RCT Homes and Grŵp Gwalia Cyf have held an innovative design competition to investigate the balance between Welsh architectural heritage and the drive for low energy demand homes.
The competition, ReDesigning the Terrace, attracted over 100 expressions of interest from designers and architects working in Wales, the UK and internationally. A judging panel comprising representatives from all partner organisations have shortlisted 12 schemes of exceptionally high quality.
Andrew Sutton, RSAW President said:
“We were delighted with the standard of entries and impressed with the innovative approaches taken to the challenge of balancing our built heritage with our sustainability goals on small sites.
It’s especially exciting that the competition has two Registered Social Landlord on board with one considering taking the winning scheme beyond a design concept.”
The competition will provide:
• a design that demonstrates how existing unused/ derelict housing plots can be bought back in to beneficial use in a fashion that is sensitive to the local character and history, either through comprehensive refurbishment or by careful insertion of new construction;
• a home designed for modern living and working, reflecting lifestyle issues such as technology, privacy, deliveries, lack of time and other contemporary concerns;
• a design that has a low energy demand for all aspects of daily life.
