Callaghan Square office complex – six buildings

Location: Cardiff, south Wales

Architect: Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios

Callaghan Square is a large public plaza in Cardiff, and was previously known as Bute Square.

Submitted for outline planning permission Jan 2009
Cost: £160m
Area: 46,500sqm
Developer: MEPC Cardiff Investments
Site: brownfield

Callaghan Square was developed as part of a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) scheme to link central Cardiff with Cardiff Bay.

In 1998 the development had been considered as a location for the new home of the National Assembly for Wales. The site was rejected due to the risks associated with a complex PFI scheme. It was also felt that the site would be too small and dominated by traffic.

A statue of the 2nd Marquess of Bute was relocated to the square in 2000.
