PATTERNS & 3FORM COLLABORATIVE PROJECT “LUCENT SADDLES” PART OF AUSTRIAN PAVILION EXHIBITION, VENICE BIENNALE 2010

Lucent Saddles

VENICE — Blurring the boundaries between architecture and industrial design, “Lucent Saddles” is the outcome of a collaboration between PATTERNS, a cutting edge-design office, and the material science experts at the 3form Advanced Technology Group.

PATTERNS’ inventive design pushes the aesthetic and atmospheric possibilities of 3Form’s Varia Ecoresin® system, creating a sculptural ensemble marked by translucent color, organic materials, sheer textiles and embossed textures. The project explores the power of sophisticated rendering and manufacturing techniques—deploying concepts like “saddle surface” geometry and non-uniform tiling—to produce playful and luminous solid objects.

One of the most forward-thinking material fabrication teams in the industry, 3form’s Advanced Technology Group has worked with architects to create some of today’s most exciting contemporary design. The group previously teamed up with PATTERNS in the construction of PRISM, a contemporary art gallery in Los Angeles that sports the first façade in the nation to be built entirely of resin-based composite.

Lucent Saddles is the next step in an evolving cooperative practice between PATTERNS and 3form that aims to develop a family of customized ornamental objets d’art, a line of products at once beautiful and affordable, mass produced yet unique.

Lucent Saddles will be exhibited at the Austrian Pavilion as part of the 12th edition of the prestigious Venice Biennale. Curated by a foreign architect for first time in its history and with an impressive international constituency, “Under Construction”, is organized by Commissioner Eric Owen Moss and will run from August 29 to November 21 2010
