UYU, translating to milk in Korean, is a soft serve ice cream parlour that uses organic milk as a base ingredient in all of its products.
Inspired by the crystalline patterns found in frost, an irregular motif is developed for the water jet cut metal wall and ceiling panels. This pattern also references UYU’s logo and identity, and playfully suggests the store’s product: ice cream.
Through an iterative design process of simplification and standardization, the sizing and coordination of these panels was key in providing a high quality finish.

Leckie Studio Architecture + Design is an interdisciplinary design studio based in Vancouver, Canada. The studio was founded in 2015 by principal architect Michael Leckie. We engage in the practice of design across a variety of scales and media – including architecture, interiors, installations, and product design. Our residential and commercial projects are informed by an environmental sensitivity that includes an emphasis on passive design, and flexible, modular spaces. We have most recently been honoured with the Western Living Magazine Designers of the Year Arthur Erickson Memorial Award (2016) and the NewCity Design Award of Excellence in Small Scale Residential category for Ocean Park House, South Surrey, BC (2014). Our work has been featured in publications including Arcade, Azure, Canadian Architect, design boom, and Wallpaper, among others.
