Kiev Hospital appointment 21 Jan 2008 Following a competition win at the end of last year against a strong field of seven competitors from Germany, Holland, Italy, UK, Ukraine, and USA, bdpgroupe6 is now appointed to design a 250 bed childrens hospital in Kiev, Ukraine. The All Ukrainian Health Protection Centre for Mothers and Children (The Childrens Hospital of the Future) will be a multipurpose child treatment and prevention institution with highly specialised and technologically advanced departments. Neil Cadenhead, Director of bdpgroupe6, said The objective is to build a childrens hospital with the most modern medical equipment and to organise a clinic facility that provides specialised, high tech medical care. Furthermore, as architects and engineers, we have the ability to design it very sustainably. This appointment confirms that there is a demand for the very best of European hospital design in the international arena.
![]() The site for the hospital is in a stunning area of forest at the edge of Kiev. bdpgroupe6 has designed a highly sustainable building which is sympathetic to the site. The new building separates the treatment and diagnostic areas from the ward areas and buries the former block beneath a green roof so that it merges with the forest floor. The ward blocks are inspired by the Ukrainian tradition of the dacha in the woods, re-interpreted within a modernist aesthetic. The clients intention is that the building of this up-to-date healthcare institution, of a European standard, will help to focus human and material resources, implement highly efficient technology and ensure high level of treatment and diagnostics. The new hospital will combine all the necessary components of a childrens hospital: general paediatrics and surgery, oncology, oncohematology, and a peritoneal centre. It is also intended to set up a research and training centre for paediatric doctors which will help to integrate Ukraine into the world medical community. bdggroupe6 are acting as architects and structural and environmental engineers and are supported by EC Harris as health planners, quantity surveyors and equipment advisors, and Budova Center in Kiev - architects engineers and quantity surveyors. Tbilisi hospital building : BDP Background to Project On 16 March 2006, Kateryna Yuschenko, the Head of the Supervisory Board for the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation and wife of the president of Ukraine, laid a capsule at the site of the future hospital which will be known as The All-Ukrainian Mother and Child Healthcare Centre. She said: Today we make our first step on the way to our greatest dream building a modern hospital for Ukrainian children, the best of its kind in Europe. The background to the project is that the economic, social, environmental and other difficulties faced by Ukraine in recent years have badly affected the health of the young particularly evident in the number of newborn children with serious chronic pathologies. In the country the level of oncohematological and oncological diseases and child disability is, in the view of the Charitable Foundation, unacceptably high; indeed child mortality in Ukraine has increased in the last 2 years. The Charitable Foundation considers that the health of children and teenagers should be the focus of attention of society today and in the future. In the field of motherhood and childhood, healthcare authorities and institutions should aim efforts at applying effective know-how in health care management and the best of clinical knowledge and skill to address the problems children face, giving newborns in particular a healthy start in their lives. The purpose of hospital will therefore be to provide highly qualified in-patient and outpatient diagnostics and treatment to children from all over the country by using the best knowledge in the field. Ultimately the projects goal is to improve the health of children and mothers as an important component of Ukraines social and economic potential.
