The theatres are stacked vertically and located centrally, freeing up space on the site for a large courtyard: an urban oasis and outdoor event space. Theatre foyers are located on the perimeter of the site: low transparent volumes that reinstate the urban scale of the surrounding streets and celebrate the activity within. Multiple entries create a permeable, welcoming venue, knitted into the urban fabric. It tends to communicate with the city and reflects the type of theater that it produces: straightforward and urban. Aesthetic choices made during the design phase also reflects the idea of "manufacture": Simplicity of form and the use of raw materials: glass, metal, concrete, brick. WIU Theater, Illinois, USA Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects  picture from architect WIU Theater - 26 Apr 2011 The new Western Illinois University Performing Arts Center comprises two brick-clad wings connected by a two-story, glass-walled gallery. The building will contain a 250-seat theater with thrust stage, a 150-seat studio theater and a 1,400-seat proscenium theater. Construction of the building will begin in 2012.
