Mecanoo selected for Taiwan library competition

Mecanoo’s design has been selected to be further developed in the second round of an open design competition for the new 38,000 m2 Main Library in Kaohsiung. The library will feature a reading area, lecture hall, exhibition gallery, outdoor theatre, bookstore, and underground parking.

The library will become a cultural landmark of Kaohsiung City and the first library that presents new ways of reading and learning. Mecanoo is currently active in Kaohsiung having designed the Wei-Wu-Ying Center for the Arts, currently under construction and due for completion in 2013.

Mecanoo architecten has teamed up with Artech architects out Taipei for the competition and will compete against three other teams from Taiwan for the new library which is estimated at €25,000,000. The designs will be submitted on the 14th of February 2011 with the opening expected in October 2014.

Mecanoo architecten was founded by architect/director Francine M.J. Houben. With projects all over the world, the award-winning practice has a diverse range of project types including libraries, theatres, urban plans, residential neighbourhoods, private villas, high rise, university and academic buildings, office buildings and a chapel.

Mecanoo was recently awarded the Green GOOD design award from the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies for the Delft City Hall and Train Station. Other libraries designed by Mecanoo include the TU Delft Library and the Library of Birmingham in the UK which will be realised in 2013.

The oldest city in Taiwan, Tainan has a rich history influenced by different cultures. There are remnants of maritime trade with Europe in the 17th century, of the Chinese Ming Dynasty and Japanese settlements from the beginning of the 20th century. The city is rich in temples, including the famous 17th century Confucius Temple with its cantilevered roofs and beautifully carved ceilings.
