Redondela house, Pontevedra, Spain irisarri-piñera Our first to the site-deep and narrow, on a steep slope, suspended above the estuary and the distant ocean horizon, with Vigo city below-led to a desire to maintain the commanding views of the landscape at the entrance level and make the house itself the means to descend from this situation to the allotment´s base level, with all the nuances brought into view by these different heights. The owners, like so many others in the course of history, have chosen a place to settle. Now, the architects mediate in their relationship with the place. This is a building which qualifies the way you see and feel the surroundings and the distant landscape from each space. Unlike previous cases where we have allowed other superimposed architectures to arise from the users´ action, designing scenarios with a great capacity for transformation, here there is only one architecture, and it is the scenario that opens up the inhabitants´ lives to the world. A sheet of concrete folds back like a shell from its base in the form of a retainer wall, shaping a volume which, when emptied, provides a range from recessed areas, through intermediate sequences that can be penetrated by the natural environment, to a final space which juts out with the dominating view out to the distant horizon, giving the owners back the slow gaze across the estuary that made them choose this place to live. The shell form contains the brief and at the same time resolves the structure, the planes that channel the water and the different scales that shape the spatial diversity inside. The land-based part of the programme holds the considerable storage requirements of the produce from the earth, a spatial continuum that forms the courtyard stamped into the volume, for direct contacts with the nature of the place, while also rising and distancing itself from the earth in the manner of a lookout to provide an independent, personal place. Spanish text: Vivienda unifamiliar en Redondela, Pontevedra La primera visita a la parcela supuso la voluntad de mantener la visión dominante sobre el paisaje que se tenía a la cota de acceso y hacer que la casa fuera la forma de descender desde esta situación hasta la cota inferior del terreno, con todos los matices que estas diferentes alturas ponían en la mirada. Los propietarios, como ha sido común a lo largo de la historia, eligen un lugar para asentarse. Hoy los arquitectos mediatizamos su relación con él. Es esta una construcción que cualifica en cada espacio, el modo de mirar y sentir el entorno y el paisaje lejano. Frente a otros casos, en los que hemos dejado que surjan otras arquitecturas superpuestas por las acciones de los usuarios, preparando escenarios con una gran capacidad de transformación, aquí la arquitectura es una y es el escenario que abre las vidas de sus moradores al mundo. Una lámina de hormigón se repliega a modo de cáscara desde su arranque como muro de contención, formando un volumen que en su vaciado ofrece desde lugares recónditos y ocultos a la mirada, secuencias intermedias donde se deja penetrar por la naturaleza, hasta un espacio final que se dispara hacia el exterior, con la mirada dominante sobre el paisaje lejano, devolviendo a los propietarios aquella mirada detenida sobre la ría, que les hizo elegir este sitio para vivir. La forma de la cáscara a la vez que acoge el programa, resuelve la estructura, los planos que conducen las aguas, y las diversas escalas que conforman la diversidad espacial en el interior. Un programa que acoge en su parte vinculada a la tierra, las amplias necesidades de almacenaje de los productos que aquella ofrece, un continuo espacial en planta y sección formando el patio troquelado en el volumen, que será lugar de vínculos directos con la naturaleza del lugar, y que a modo de mirador se eleva y se distancia del terreno, para ofrecer un sitio autónomo y personal. Una parcela profunda, estrecha y con fuerte pendiente que cuelga sobre la ría y el lejano horizonte del mar, con la ciudad a los pies y un cliente especial, (todos lo son), en el que se encuentran intensamente la ancestral Galicia rural y la del tiempo de la globalización.
