Cala d’Or Architecture

Cala d’Or is a beautiful East-coast Majorca resort distinguished by its Ibiza style architecture.

The population of this Majorcan town is just 3,800 but this increases in Summer with foreign visitors. The feel of the town is pleasant, plenty of pedestrian streets and a mix of luxury villas and hotels that gather around a series of narrow bays.Cala d’Or manages to conceal a large amount of rooms within its gently hilly terrain screened by Corsican pines and punctuated by the long sea inlets and beaches.

As architects we enjoyed the Ibiza-style buildings and more traditional Moorish motifs in the Mediterranean waterfront houses, but the highlight without any bias having walked around the town is the Cala Esmeralda hotel, clearly designed and renovated with great attention to detail by designers with a good eye.

The town centre is very lively in the summer months but much more low key than the larger and more populated resorts in Majorca. The pedestrianised area offers a variety of shops, bars, and restaurants and a wide selection of international cuisine. Also popular is the marina area with its yachts and chartered boats.

The majority of buildings in this Majorcan seafront town are painted in traditional Mediterranean white. The outskirts of the settlement are home to quiet holiday villas whereas nearer to the coast it is dotted with several hotels and apartments.

This Majorca town is approximately 45 minutes from Palma airport. The nearest major town is Santanyi to the west (inland). The pretty fishing port of Porto Petro is only a five minute journey by car and can also be reached by the mini train. The Balearic Islands are easily reached from most parts of Europe.

The Balearic Islands resort is known for soft white sand and blue-green seas, backed by pine forests. Rated restaurants include the Yacht Club at the marina, Port Petit and Gadus.

Comments / photos for the Cala d’Or BuildingsMajorca Architecture page welcome

This Mediterranean tourist town is a “stretch of development along the east coast that includes a number of coves and resorts (Cala Ferrera, Cala Esmeralda, Cala Serena, Cala Gran & Cala Llonga). Each of the various calas (bays) has its own distinctive character where former fishing harbours have been turned into marinas.

The resort has been sympathetically developed, with plenty of white-washed adobe style buildings and it is one of the nicer resorts along the east coast.”
