With the first grant-aided exhaust-air heat pump in Scotland to power the under-floor heating and hot-water system, together with solar panels and over-insulation, this corrugated and larch clad ‘shed’ should prove economical in the extreme. External shutters can be slid into place on a track in front of the large area of glazing to bring a sense of protection during the wild Highland winter storms. While there is under-floor heating throughout the house, a large woodburning stove has been installed to provide an additional point of focus in the downstairs open-plan living/dining area.

To make the best use of the location and views, the siting and layout of this structure was key. Upstairs a cantilevered picture window gives a view of the Cuillin mountain range while the large area of glazing downstairs faces south-west to the sea loch and across to the islands of Rhum and Canna.
