Scottish Design Awards 2004

Carnyx Group PR Scottish Design Awards 2004 Reiach and Hall Architects were hugely successful at this year's Scottish Design Awards, picking up five architecture awards, four of which were for client AMA (New Town) Ltd. Westport - Scottish Design Awards: 2004 Winner, image © adrian welch The architecture jury was chaired by John McAslan, who was joined by Professor Isi Metzstein, Adrian Welch, who runs edinburgharchitecture.co.uk, Keith Brownlie of Wilkinson Eyre, Roddy Langmuir of Edward Cullinan Architects, and Penny Lewis, editor of Prospect. In the category of Best Housing Project, Reiach and Hall beat two nominees including Elder & Cannon for Strathallan Developments - The Icon and Wren Rutherford Austin:Smith for Lord for Ayrshire Housing - St Cuthbert's Street, Maybole to win the award for 1 Succoth Avenue, Edinburgh. Carol MacBain, Neil Gillespie and Dr Ali Afshar went on stage to pick up the trophy. Later in the evening Reiach and Hall Architects were announced as the only company to be nominated by the judges for the category Best Commercial Project. Again, they won the award for AMA (New Town) Ltd, this time for the project Westport, Evolution House. The two nominations in the category Buildings in Context were Reiach and Hall's Westport, Evolution House and Graven Images for Merchant City Gateway. Again, Reiach and Hall won the category and Neil Gillespie and Dr Ali Afshar collected the trophy from Councilor Trevor Davis of Edinburgh City Council. In the category Architect of the Year, which was voted for by readers of Prospect, Neil Gillespie from Reiach and Hall beat Mick Duncan from RMJM and Dick Cannon from Elder & Cannon. The judges felt that the final result was extremely close, but that Neil Gillespie had enjoyed an unprecedented 2 years of success and completed a number of widely admired projects. The final and most prestigious award won by Reiach and Hall was the Architecture Grand Prix for client AMA (New Town) Ltd. Under a unanimous verdict by the judges, the award went to the project Westport, Evolution House and was described on the night by the judges as, "...a mid-sized commercial building which superbly relates to its context. Contemporary in design, and superb in its quality of execution, the judges all felt it was a product of enlightened patronage". Words by Penny Lewis, Editor Prospect journal & Design Award judge. The Scottish Design Awards were launched in 1998 and are Scotland’s premiere annual design event. Upwards of 500-600 entries were received from a mix of small and large design companies, advertising agencies and architects. The architecture jury, chaired by John McAslan, included Professor Isi Metzstein, Adrian Welch (who runs edinburgharchitecture.co.uk), Keith Brownlie of Wilkinson Eyre, Roddy Langmuir of Edward Cullinan Architects, and Penny Lewis, editor of Prospect. Following on from the success of our Wolfson Medical School for the University of Glasgow, credited as Best Public Building in Scotland 2003, Reiach and Hall have this year swept the board. Winning an unprecedented 5 awards, all of our submitted projects received acclaim. Architect of the Year 2004 (voted for by his peers) was won by Neil Gillespie, design director and Reiach and Hall's chairman. The judges felt that the final result was extremely close, between Mick Duncan from RMJM and Dick Cannon from Elder & Cannon, but that Neil Gillespie had enjoyed an unprecedented 2 years of success and completed a number of widely admired projects. 1 Succoth Avenue, Edinburgh for AMA (New Town) Ltd. won Best Housing Project 2004. Neil Gillespie feels that 'Succoth Heights realises a long dreamed of opportunity to explore the making of contemporary homes which can stand comparison with the quality of Edinburgh's unparalleled traditional city living.' Westport, Evolution House, also for AMA (New Town) Ltd., not only won the Best Commercial Building 2004 but also won the Buildings in Context award 2004. Up against significant international competition, most notably the potent and symbolic Maggie's Centre in Dundee by Frank Gehry & James F Stephen Architects, Westport went on to win the most prestigious and ultimate Architecture Grand Prix 2004 for client AMA (New Town) Ltd. These 3 Scottish Design Awards for Westport support it's previous success as a RIBA Award winner 2003, the highly commended EAA Silver Medal credit, Civic Trust 2004 commendation and shortlisted as 1 of 5 in last year's RIAS prize promoted by the late Andrew Doolan.
