New Director for Scottish Civic Trust

Following a national recruitment campaign, the Scottish Civic Trust, one of Scotland's leading organisations promoting respect and understanding for the built environment, has appointed a new director.

John Pelan, formerly Director of Communications with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and Director of John Pelan Associates, a specialist architectural communications consultancy, has taken up the post based in the Tobacco Merchants House in Glasgow's Merchant City.

Pelan replaces Terry Levinthal who left the Trust in February to become Director, Conservation Services & Projects with the National Trust for Scotland.

Commenting on his new position, John Pelan said: "I am very excited about this opportunity. The Scottish Civic Trust has a unique role to play in Scottish society, fostering understanding of the built environment and providing leadership in areas of historical and contemporary architecture and well as engaging with the wider public. Buildings affect us all and we all deserve a say in what is being designed and built around us from schools and shops to offices and homes."

The Scottish Civic Trust co-ordinates a number of public-centred projects around the country, including Doors Open Day, the PhotoArch competition for schoolchildren and the new My Place Award, the winner of which will be announced on 19 April. The Trust also maintains the Buildings at Risk Register on behalf of Historic Scotland, advises on planning decisions and acts as the umbrella organisation for a network of affiliated associations and groups throughout Scotland. The Scottish Civic Trust was founded in 1967.
