Double detailed planning consent in central Stirling by Michael Laird Architects

Michael Laird Architects are delighted to announce that they have recently gained detailed planning consent for two separate building projects within central Stirling.

Both projects have developed out of the partnership’s appointment in 1999 as masterplan architects for the regeneration of the land fronting Stirling Railway Station – Station Square. The Station Square masterplan provides an exciting ‘gateway’ to Stirling and forges pedestrian links between the rail and bus infrastructure to the regenerated commercial centre, the historic town centre and Stirling Castle.

Mixed Use Development

This project for Stirling Housing Joint Venture Project defines the southern boundary of the site and comprises a two storey tourist orientation centre addressing a new public square opposite the Station, three retail units at ground floor level and twenty eight residential flats on the four upper storeys.

Speculative Office Building

This project for Central Scotland Business Parks Ltd is located at the northernmost tip of the site comprising of four storeys of high quality office accommodation focused around a fully glazed and full height entrance area. The building provides approximately 40,000 sq.ft (nett) of office space with the ability to let each floor separately or to subdivide each floor into smaller suites if required. Twenty three car parking spaces have also been provided at ground floor level.

Design

Both building’s height and massing respect and relate to the urban fabric of the town centre but their simple, contemporary design, contrasting with the surrounding architecture, strives to reinvigorate this neglected part of town by acting as a catalyst for further development and the completion of the masterplan.

Adjacent to the site, to the south, is a major retail development, Thistle Centre Stirling, a rather unappealing architectural mass in the centre of the town, especially when viewed from the East.
