City Design Co-operative Ltd. is happy to announce that ‘Dysart Artworks’ has won this year’s Scottish Design Awards in the category Landscape Architecture.

Dysart Artworks

The Dysart Artworks project is designed by City Design in collaboration with: Donald Urquhart, Alec Finlay, Tom Clarke, Ken Cockburn and Studio LR. It was an 18 month long collaboration between landscape architects, artists, poets, the local authority and the local community to create a series of new artworks and public spaces linked by the Fife Coastal Path within Dysart.

It is one of a number of projects intended to contribute to positive change in the town. Each work draws its inspiration from the coastal landscape and the specific site characteristics. Rather than clutter the town and coast line with ‘object sculptures’ each artwork acts as a device to view familiar aspects of the landscape and the town in new ways.

Description of works/pictures:

Sea Beams

Sea Beams by Donald Urquhart is a grouping of nine 350x350mm square section oak beams varying in height from 7 – 9 meters above ground level. Each beam was cut from a single tree sourced from a sustainable source in Perthshire and dressed to the specified dimensions in Fife. The varying colours of the beams are derived from photographs of the Firth of Forth taken under different light conditions. The photographs were taken by local residents. Sea Beams sits in a new public space comprising a crushed marble ground plane, oak furniture, Scottish beach pebbles and coastal planting.

Shaded Wall

Shaded Wall by Donald Urquhart is a wall painting of approx. 95sq.m The painting depicts the shadow of a tree on Dysart Kirk.

Nest Boxes
Nest Boxes by Alec Finlay is a series of 12 bird boxes fixed to trees in the arboretum of Ravenscraig Park.

Ravenscraig Gateway
This work is comprised of 3 pieces:

Inscribed Stones by Tom Clarke are 2 dressed Clashach stone blocks 300x530mm inscribed with “Sprinked with Light’ and “Dappled with Shade”

Ravenscraig Park Portal

Ravenscraig Park Portal by City Design is an oak frame approx.3×4.5m painted blue and dark green. It frames 2 different views: the view to the Sea Beams and the Bass Rock and the view to St. Serfs tower and the town.

Sailor’s Walk Window

Sailor’s Walk Window by City Design is a Corten steel frame 2×0.2m cut into exiting railings focusing the view on the horizon.

Ravenscraig
Ravenscraig, by Ken Cockburn is an A5 book of Mesostic Poems written by children from the local high school and primary school.
