Wilkinson Eyres designs for new Winter Sports complex in Russia unveiled 17 Mar 2009 Wilkinson Eyre Architects has unveiled designs for a new 300,000m² ski jump and sports complex in Russias historic city of Nizhny Novgorod. The state funded development, to be used as a training facility and reserve site for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, will include 5 Olympic Ski Jumps with spectator grandstands, an indoor ski bowl, an indoor skating rink, an aqua park and a Nordic competition cross country ski course, along with a 5-Star hotel and luxury apartments - all linked by an internal retail mall.

Otherwise fluid and low lying in form, the project is defined by a dynamic and expressive 125 metre high ski jump structure which rises above the skyline. Matthew Priestman, Wilkinson Eyre Architects, commented: Our proposals are a response to a complex brief on a sensitive site. Nizhny Novgorod was once a famous ski-jump centre and this heritage is celebrated by placing the ski jump as an iconic form at the heart of the scheme, with the additional elements of the complex designed as low lying forms along the banks of the river.
