IQU INNOVAZIONE E QUALITA' URBANA EuroP.A. 2009 PRIZE
STUDIOUAP AND LAND AWARDED
PARK AND CHILDREN'S RECREATION CENTRE AT CORVIALE - ROME

The project for the renovation of the Public Park and the new Children's
Centre next to the Corviale Housing in the outskirts of Rome, designed
by LAND Srl and StudioUAP, has been awarded with a special prize in
occasion of the Fifth edition of the Innovation and Urban Quality
Prize (www.euro-pa.it). The project has been fostered by the XVI Department
of the City of Rome within the "Contratto di Quartiere II - Corviale",
in one of the suburban areas of the city internationally known for
its social suffering.
Corviale Recreation Centre - Project Description
The renovation of the 14.000 sqm Park foresees the introduction of
new activities together with a Children's Recreation Centre for 45
kids.
The project for the park foresees the improvement of the existing
pathways and introduction of new trees. At the present it's abandoned
conditions and topographic morphology especially along the borders
makes it an unsafe place for the inhabitants. The project's aim is
to introduce a coherent structure of its spaces identifying in a clear
sequence the accesses and pathways. The new episodes for leisure and
play are underlined by the use of the materials and a new vegetation
map.
The building is constructed to compliment the morphology of the site
in order to improve its environmental impact. The new (360 sqm) "bridge"
building is on one level, located across a descending slope of the
park facing the Corviale Housing building. It is possible to walk
over the curved rooftop and reach the existing different ground levels.
A new public space is introduced without subtracting any surface from
the park. Two main activities are foreseen: the Children's Recreation
Centre (reading room, 2 laboratories, 2 halls and facilities); the
Deposit for recycling materials for the "Re Mida" project.
Solar panels will cover 50% of the energy requirements.
STUDIOUAP, in Rome since 2001, it's works are mostly on public spaces
and participation. Urban projects, architecture and landscape design
are the occasions for experimenting models for the introduction of
social interaction especially with children and low tech architecture.
Recent prizes: First prize for the "Meno e più 5"
Competition in Rome and Paesaggi Mirati in Novara.

The green area beneath the well known Corviale building, along via
Poggioverde and via Mazzacurati has been involved in a participated
decision taking process. As a result the Municipality of Rome has
decided to renovate the park and build a new recreation area for kids
(ages 3-12 years).
The program for the recreation centre for 45 children foresees: 2
laboratories, a reading room, a hall facing the park and a hall facing
the street with a secretary and facilities. It also includes spaces
for the "Re Mida" project: a wide storage room where kids
can pick the materials to be re-used for arts and crafts activities.
The project has to deal with two major problems: 1. build a construction
in a existing public green area; 2. improve the accessibility to the
existing park from the Corviale housing.
The first problem needs a solution with minor waste of public surface.
The building is located and shaped in such a way it is made possible
to walk on its roof. This solves also the second problem since
the roof, covered with outdoor rubber material, has a sloped shape
and connects the park to the street, like a bridge building
that leads the pedestrian walkway over the existing hill. For the
disabled it is possible to walk through the building since the inner
space cuts through the hill.
An urban signal is positioned next to the main entrance on via Mazzacurati:
a metal structure about 4 mt high where to place the advertisements
for the recreation centres activities and the solar panels.
The façade is in wood, glass and metal. A thick metal strip
(40 cm) underlines the sloping line of the rooftops and contains the
water drainage system. The glass windows are protected with removable
metal grids.
