YRM Wins Masterplan for Transylvania Tractor Regeneration Project
YRM have been selected to masterplan the regeneration of 123-hectare former
tractor factory in Brasov, Romania.
The Tractorul site was formerly one of the worlds largest
production complexes for tractors producing over a million models. The
site constitutes an eighth of the area of the city of Brasov, Romanias
second largest city. It is superbly located close to the trans-European
road and rail routes connecting the North and Black seas and is surrounded
by exceptional alpine countryside, recently used in the film Cold
Mountain.

The aim now is to regenerate the site with a mix of commercial and lifestyle
uses with extensive landscaping. The plan is to develop a medium density
scheme over 15 years comprising 6,000 apartments; a large mall and retail
park; offices; a hotel with linked exhibition and conference facilities;
a regional hospital, education campus, and civic and social buildings.
Project Director Iain Macdonald commented Tractorul is an exceptional
opportunity to generate sustainable development for WORK-LIVE-PLAY,
a concept which aims to link the city and its alpine hinterland. Brasov
currently receives 400,000 visitors per year, and with the high level
of interest being shown by operators and developers wishing to co-invest,
we believe it could become a year-round alternative to the Black Sea resorts.
Centerra Capital Partners selected YRM from an international shortlist
that included von Gerkan Mark & Partners, MVRDV, D Architekten, Squires,
AukettFitzroyRobinson and Burrows Cave. BuroHappold and Norman Disney
& Young partner with YRM in the project.
