Cowshed House, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia – 21 Aug 2013
Design: Carterwilliamson
Cowshed House Sydney
photo : Brett Boardman

The cowshed sat on a small parcel of land bounded on three sides by roads. The building was simple, essentially a long brick wall that held the urban edge of corner and street and returned to house a few bedrooms in the place of the former stalls. It was the most basic of accommodation but the shed had a worn patina of stories and was well situated, hugging the southern boundary with provision for a private, north facing courtyard.

Corner House, Bangkok, Thailand – 20 Aug 2013
Design: IF (Integrated Field)
Baan Moom Thailand
photo : Wison Tungthunya & IF

This house for a family of five is located on Sukhumvit Rd., Soi 101/1, next to their old house where they had been living since long time ago. According to the scale of the site and owner’s love of nature, open space, and gardening give an initial idea for this house design. All functions are packed and stacked into 3-storeys to provide the most open space possible on the ground level.

Croft House Inverloch, Victoria, Australia – 19 Aug 2013
Design: James Stockwell Architect
Crofthouse Inverloch Australia
photo : James Archibald

Quite early in the assessment process, from a field of 240 commendable entries, each the result of professional passion, a single project emerged from the crowd to announce itself with a clear voice above all others. Subsequently, throughout a rigorous process, that project remained to become a unanimous, clear leader and as fresh as the new day.

Compson Bach, Great Barrier Island, New Zealand – 14 Aug 2013
Design: Herbst Architects
Compson Bach New Zealand

The relationship between spaces is ordered around the contention that the covered outside deck is the primary space. The covered deck is flanked by a sun trapped court and the kitchen and dining space. To ensure the usability of the covered deck it is enclosed on two sides with the third accessorised with sliding shutters to screen the wind. An outdoor fireplace generates the required heating and ambience and acts as the heart of the bach.

Clifton Beach Apartment, Cape Town, South Africa – 12 Jul 2013
Design: ANTONI ASSOCIATES, Architects
Clifton Beach Building
photo : Adam Letch

This waterfront project combines elegance, luxury and sophistication in a beach front property located along one of the pristine beaches of Cape Town. The Client’s brief was to renovate a ground floor double level apartment in a newly constructed luxury complex. The design of the original unit felt constricted and the Client wanted to add a fourth master bedroom suite.

Capitol Hill Residence, Seattle, Washington, USA – 27 May 2013
Design: Balance Associates Architects
Capitol Hill Residence Seattle
photo : Steve Keating Photography

With a compact form and several integrated sustainable systems, this residence achieves the client’s goals to maximize the site’s views and resources while responding to its microclimate. The roof rainwater collects into a steel entry water feature, day light penetrates deep into the house through a central translucent slot, and exterior mounted mechanical shades can prevent excessive heat gain.

Casa CorMAnca, México – 23 May 2013
Design: PAUL CREMOUX studio
Casa CorMAnca Mexico
photo : Héctor Armanado Herrera / PCW

On a 12 meters by 13 meters (39ft by 42ft) plot of land, a monolithic volume is transformed in order to attain luminous indoor spaces. Slade stone at the exterior facades is contrasted with the soft beech wood finish, achieving great definition and special discovery. Built in a small plot of land 176 m2, (1894 SqFt), the construction rises looking south to the vertical vegetation garden wall. It is a 3 stories high assembly where the main terrace is to be found at the second level, follow by a small lecture studio.

Casa Bunker, Buenos Aires, Argentina – 25 Apr 2013
Design: Botteri-Connell Office
Buenos Aires Residence
photo : Gustavo Sosa Pinilla

The house has been built in a suburban neighbourhood and has been thought for someone who will live there permanently and whose children, friends and couple will visit them from time to time.

Contemporary House in Johannesburg , South Africa – 15 Apr 2013
Design: Nico van der Meulen Architects
Contemporary House in Johannesburg
photo from architect

Another luxury contemporary South African house by this architecture practice: as a result of an impeccable renovation, the house is divided into public and private spaces. To enter the private areas of the home, one must cross a bridge above a new internal water feature which breaks the public and private spaces, separating the entrance hall and study from the private home.

Casa del Acantilado – New House in Alicante
Design: Fran Silvestre Arquitectos
New House in Spain
photograph : Diego Opazo

19 Nov 2012 – Another modern white coloured residence looking out over the sea, but this residence doesn’t follow the normal rules. There is a curious schism in the middle of the property (see the photo above) between hovering volume and terraced outdoor space. Also the proportions are highly unusual, with the ‘observatory rectangle’ looking out over the Mediterranean giving the feeling of being rather squashed.

Cotacachi House, Imbabura, northern Ecuador – 4 Apr 2013
Design: arquitectura x
Cotacachi House Ecuador
photo : Sebastian Crespo

Based on the architects’ experience for their own house, they applied the same strategy: a universal scheme that can work for any site condition, a house whose spatial limits will be the two mountains that dominate the valley, the abstract glass house as a starting point. But they were also convinced that the universal and abstract need to become specific in order to work, specific to topography, weather, use, etc. but there is one aspect that makes architecture specific that interests the architects above all: construction and materiality.

Casa Varanda, Brazil – 4 Apr 2013
Design: Carla Juaçaba
Casa Varanda Brazil
photo : Fran Parente

A house made for the granddaughter of great architect Sergio Bernardes and a Colombian artist was a challenge. At first they wanted the house to have caracteristics of Casa Lota made by his grandfather in 1950, from wich we kept some materials such as the ceiling. The development of the project was very interactive.

House in Rio Bonito, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – 1 Apr 2013
Design: Carla Juaçaba
Casa Rio Bonito Brazil
photo : Nelson Kon

This building is a weekend home in Brazil. Two voids puncture the roof at either end of the structure, washing the interior surface of the stone bearing walls with light and creating a stark contrast between the weight of the structure and lightness of the roof and floor which float above the rough ground.

Contemporary House in Zapallar, Chile – added 25 Mar 2013
Design: Gubbins Arquitectos
Contemporary House in Zapallar
photo : Pablo Montecinos

The main strategy was to create a big terrace, creating this “new floor” that would allow the “leisure life” and make even more perceptible the Ocean sight, Offering a unique relationship between the inhabitant and the horizon line, the same way as the cliffs do. The terrace extends towards the Ocean, removing the view of the existing houses. The program decomposes into “two units”. This allows to get in touch with the ground in the proper way, and provides the architectonical support for the terrace.

New House in Buenos Aires, Argentina – ‘Casa Agua’ – 19 Mar 2013
Design: Barrionuevo Sierchuk Arquitectas
New House in Buenos Aires
photo from architects

The site is 2,000 sqm, in the suburbs of Buenos Aires. It has 450 sqm and it is designed for a couple without kids, with, in the ground floor, a program of very large reception areas, that open and closes by very big wooden sliding doors that hide into the walls.

Casa El Pangue, Patagonia, Chile – added 26 Feb 2013
Design: Elton+Leniz Arquitectos asociados
New House in Patagonia
photograph : Natalia Vial

This house stands on a steep sloping site, facing the ocean. It is developed towards a central vertical circulation, connecting the 4 levels and 3 terraces in which the house is organized, in order to get as much of the view of the Pacific Ocean as possible, taking advantage of the height offered by the natural slope of the site.

Casa Entre Arboles, Yucatan, Mexico
Architects: Muñoz Arquitectos Asociados
New House in Mexico
photo : Rolando Córdoba

20 Feb 2013 – The residence “Entre Arboles” (amongst trees) is the result of a deep analysis of the site. The lot is in a golf course, it is a regular rectangle of 20 by 80 meters and has 52 trees in it all of different sizes and heights.

Canary Islands House, La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain – 11 Sep 2012
Architect: Alejandro Beautell, Beautell Arquitectos
New Canary Islands House
photograph : Efraín Pintos

The renovated single family house is situated in the historic city centre of La Laguna, declared by UNESCO in 1999 the cultural heritage of humanity. The building is situated between party walls and is designed as a single-family house, with two floors above ground level. Its composition is simple and represents a worthy exponent of traditional domestic urban architecture of the eighteenth century in the Canary Islands.

Clifton House, Cape Town, South Africa – 14 Aug 2012
Design: SAOTA – Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects
Clifton House
photo : SAOTA & Adam Letch

The clients, a British couple living in Cape Town, requested a six-bedroom, seven-level home that makes the most of the site, the views and the mountain. The lower levels of the existing structure were totally remodelled while the upper level was demolished to allow for two new levels.

Cloud House, North Fitzroy, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia – 23 Jul 2012
Architect: McBride Charles Ryan
Cloud House
photo : John Gollings

The Cloud House is an addition and renovation to a double-fronted Edwardian house in Fitzroy North. Over the course of close to a century, this house has received several additions and modifications. McBride Charles Ryan’s work for the house is designed in three parts. This allows for a sequence of distinct and unexpected episodes, with glimpses previewing oncoming spaces and experiences as you move through the home.

Country House in Suffolk, England – 19 Jul 2012
Design: Jerry Tate Architects
Country House in Suffolk
image from architects

Planning received for a 500m2 country house on a greenfield site in Easton. The contemporary design integrates the building and landscape in both form and function. The form of the house is inspired by the shape and structure of a sycamore seed, and the building links physically with the proposed parkland to achieve a co-dependent self-sufficiency in terms of energy, water and food. This functionality is a traditional part of county house design, reinterpreted for 21st Century requirements.
